And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Loulé
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Carnival season, with the main corso on the three days to Shrove Tuesday, plus winter golf value outside carnival week.
Mae Soberana festivities from Easter Sunday, wild orchids on Rocha da Pena, and waterfall flow at its best.
Best all round months: warm, everything open, thinner crowds, and Festival MED in late June.
Hottest and busiest on the coast, with full car parks and top prices; Noite Branca lights up town in late August.
Peak golf conditions and prices, warm sea and thinner beach crowds; book tee times far ahead.
Mild, quiet and cheapest for golf and town, with occasional rain; the salt mine and museums carry a wet day.

Quinta do Lago
luxury golf base

Think twice about
- MAR Shopping and industrial edge of Loulé
Car only sprawl by the mall and motorway roads, with nothing to walk to. A boring, transport poor base, not a safety issue.
- N125 corridor through Almancil
A traffic choked main road strip. Drive through it to specific restaurants, do not base on it expecting to stroll.
- Vilamoura marina front in July and August
Late night bar noise and drunk golf tour groups until late. Light sleepers should sleep on the beach side or in Quarteira.
- Salir and Alte as bases without a car
Beautiful villages but tiny and quiet, with thin evening services and buses. Visit as day trips, sleep in town or on the coast.

Is Loulé safe?
- There is no Loulé town area to avoid as a base on safety grounds; the avoid list is about noise, sprawl and transport.
- Carry water and go early on Rocha da Pena, which has no shade or water on the plateau.
- At Queda do Vigário the pool is deep and the rocks slippery, so supervise children closely.
- Swim at lifeguarded beach zones and respect the flags, and take care on the busy N125 road. Emergency number 112.
Loulé travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Gypsy Market is mostly imported flea market stock; the covered municipal market is the real Saturday market.
- MAR Shopping and the IKEA zone are a resident mall, not an attraction; use a rainy day for the salt mine instead.
- Beach club pricing on the Ancão and Garrão strip is set for villa rentals; the same sand is free a few hundred metres along.
- Vilamoura marina front restaurants charge for the boat view; walk two streets back or eat in Quarteira.
Getting around Loulé: public transport and more
- Loulé town is compact and walkable, but the coast, golf, Alte, Salir and Querenca all need a car, bus or taxi.
- Faro Airport is about 20 minutes by car or taxi, while the bus via Faro takes about an hour with a change.
- Loulé train station sits several kilometres south of the centre, so it is not a walk off the train arrival.
- On Saturday market mornings, arrive and park before 10am or expect to circle.
