Things to do in Kalmar
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kalmar
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Late May to June is best overall: long evenings, flowers, warming sea, Öland green and not yet crowded, plus Midsummer.
July is peak, warmest and busiest, with swimming, longest opening hours and Borgholm in full summer mode.
August is events month, still summer, with Kalmar Stadsfest and IRONMAN Kalmar on consecutive weekends.
September is the connoisseur month: migration birding, no crowds, best golf and cycling, and the Öland Harvest Festival.
October is shoulder season: Glasriket and forest Småland carry the trip while Öland mostly shuts.
November to February is worst for a first visit: dark, windy and much closed, with the castle Christmas market as the winter reason.
March to April is early spring, improving, with Easter openings, first birds and late April Alvar blooms, at low prices.
What's on
- Midsummer weekend nearest 19-25 June
Maypoles, herring and new potatoes at Stensö, Skälby and villages across Öland, with closures on Midsummer Eve.

Crown Princess Victoria's birthday celebrations at Borgholm and Solliden bring the royal family and national TV to Öland.
- Kalmar Stadsfest early/mid-August

Best things to do in Kalmar
Kalmar Castle
Scandinavia at its best in one Renaissance palace, with state rooms, dungeons, ramparts and the Kalmar Union story.
Kalmar County Museum
The Kronan flagship wreck and its recovered treasure make this the surprise museum hit of a Kalmar trip.
Gamla Stan
Kalmar in one slow loop: medieval lanes by the castle, then the planned 17th century streets of Kvarnholmen.
Kalmar Cathedral
A major Swedish baroque church on the main square that explains the whole planned city in one short stop.
Krusenstiernska Gården
A lived-in 19th century burgher house whose walled garden cafe is the quiet pause on a castle day.

A small, dense collection of ship models and figureheads that explains why this harbour existed.
Where to stay in Kalmar
Kvarnholmen
first trip, all-round base
The cathedral, square, station, museum and most restaurants are on or within five minutes of this walkable island.
Gamla Stan / Slottsområdet
charm and quiet, romantic or slow trips
Old town lanes closer to the castle and park, a little further from the station and busiest restaurants.
Ängö, Varvsholmen and the near waterfront districts
apartments and longer stays
Modern waterfront housing and marina views a short bridge walk or bike ride into the centre, with quieter nights.
Färjestaden / Borgholm (Öland)
an Öland-focused summer trip
Base on Öland for beaches, Ekerum golf and July Borgholm nights, and day trip Kalmar for the castle.
Think twice about
- Hansa City / Giraffen shopping district and the E22 motorway hotels
Retail parks and arterial roads with nothing walkable after dinner. You will spend the trip driving or bussing to the Kalmar you came for.
- Norrliden, Berga, Smedby and the other outer residential districts
Ordinary housing districts with no hotels of note and no sights. You will be bored and bus dependent.

Is Kalmar safe?
- Emergency number is 112 and Kalmar County Hospital is a full regional hospital.
- Main risks are cold Baltic water, slippery jetty rocks and algae bloom days: obey bathing notices.
- Watch for elk and moose on inland Småland roads at dusk, especially on the Glasriket drive.
- Lock bikes, as bike theft is the classic city petty crime, and take care on icy winter cobbles.
- Alcohol stronger than light beer is Systembolaget only, which closes early Saturday and all Sunday.
Kalmar travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Ölands Djur & Nöjespark near the bridge: old rides, fine for desperate parents, not a best of.
- The Öland Bridge as an attraction: it is a view and a drive, not a stop worth planning around.
- Solliden if you do not like gardens: you see a park and a house exterior only.
- Hansa City and Giraffen shopping: an ordinary Swedish retail park, do not let an afternoon drift there.
- Ernesto and the big Larmtorget terraces for food: volume without scores, drink there and eat elsewhere.
- Astrid Lindgren's World in Vimmerby is a full day family park, never a quick Kalmar add on.
Getting around Kalmar: public transport and more
- Walk the centre: Kvarnholmen, Gamla Stan, castle and station are within 15 minutes.
- Kalmar Länstrafik buses cover Stensö, Skälby, Hansa City and the airport, and bridge buses serve Färjestaden and Borgholm; pay by app or card.
- Rent a car for the Öland and Glasriket days only, picking up and returning at the station or airport.
- Sweden is effectively cashless: cards and phones are accepted everywhere, including museums and market stalls.
- Centre and attraction parking is paid and app based; pay in the app before walking away.
