Best time to visit Gothenburg
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Late May to June is the connoisseur window: light until late, Botanical in bloom, archipelago waking and pre peak prices.
July is warmest for the sea and everything is open, including Marstrand sailing, but prices and crowds peak.
August brings Way Out West, the Culture Festival and crayfish season. Book festival dates deliberately.
September is shoulder good: lobster season, strong food, decent light and crowds gone.
April to early May brings spring, the Science Festival and improving light, while the archipelago is still quiet and cold.
December works for Christmas at Liseberg and Lucia, with lights from mid afternoon. Do not visit 24 to 27 December, when the city shuts.
November is the honest low point: dark, wet, Liseberg between seasons and the archipelago largely shut, with no festival rescue.
January and February are colder but crisper, redeemed by the Film Festival and winter cosiness if you build the trip indoors.
What's on

Sweden's flagship city music festival in Slottsskogen. Book six months ahead or avoid the dates entirely.
- Gothenburg Culture Festival August
Kulturkalaset, a huge free street festival of food and music on city centre stages, around Way Out West.

Liseberg's Christmas market and the city Christmas City season, Sweden's best known Christmas experience.

What to book ahead
- Liseberg Amusement Park: weeks ahead
- Paddan Sightseeing: a few days ahead
- Universeum: a few days ahead
- Vinga Lighthouse: weeks ahead
- Sea Kayaking, Gothenburg Archipelago: a few days ahead
- Mackerel Fishing Trips from Hönö: weeks ahead
- Lobster Safari from Hönö: weeks ahead
- Hills Golf & Sports Club: weeks ahead
- Fine dining such as Signum, Hoze, Koka, Project and 28+ needs 4 to 8 weeks. Popular mid range weekend dinners need 1 to 2 weeks.
- Liseberg ride passes sell out on peak summer, Halloween and Christmas dates. Island hotels in July must be booked early.
- No booking is needed for museums, public archipelago ferries, hall lunches or Slottsskogen and the Botanical Garden.
Is Gothenburg safe?
- Safe for visitors with normal city awareness. Central risks are petty: bike theft, tram pickpocketing and late night drunkenness.
- Emergency number is 112 and police non emergency is 114 14. Winter darkness and icy cobbles injure more visitors than crime.
Gothenburg travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Avenyn terrace restaurants charge a location premium for average food. Eat one street off and walk Avenyn after.
- Nordstan mall has zero local character. A harbour view shrimp sandwich can cost far more than the same sandwich in Saluhallen.
- Do not pay for a guided archipelago cruise and expect island time, and never build a trip around Liseberg without checking its seasonal calendar.
Getting around Gothenburg: public transport and more
- Trams are the city. Västtrafik trams, buses and river ferries run on one ticket in the To Go app, and southern archipelago ferries are included.
- Walking plus tram covers Centrum, Haga, Linné, Avenyn and Korsvägen. Tram 11 runs to Saltholmen for the islands.
- Landvetter airport is about 25 minutes by Flygbussarna coach to Central Station. Cars are a burden in the centre; the city is cashless.
