Things to do in Erbil
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Erbil
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is the best window: green hills, strong waterfalls, 15 to 28 degrees, and Newroz on 20 and 21 March.
Summer runs 40 to 45 degrees in the city; sightseeing moves to mornings and evenings and the mountains fill at weekends.
Autumn is the second window: the heat breaks, the old city is walkable and rates ease outside peaks.
Winter is cold and wet in the city, with snow on Korek and in the Rawanduz mountains and quieter old city streets.
What's on
- Newroz in Akre 20 to 21 March, celebrations to about 23 March
The Kurdish new year: family picnics across the Region and a dusk torch procession up the mountain at Akre to light the summit fire.

What to book ahead
- Rawanduz: a few days ahead
- Korek Mountain Resort: a few days ahead
- Shanidar Cave: a few days ahead
- Lalish Temple: a few days ahead
- Akre: a few days ahead
- Divan Erbil Hotel: weeks ahead
- Erbil Rotana: weeks ahead
- Qi 21: a few days ahead
- Book drivers and hotels early for Newroz in March, when Akre and the whole Region fill completely.
- Check the Korek cable car is running before building a day on it, as closures are reported.
- Arrange the visa that matches where you land: Kurdistan and federal Iraq run separate regimes.
Is Erbil safe?
- Non-essential travel to the region is currently discouraged, and standard policies often exclude Iraq, so carry cover that actually applies.
- Stay away from military and security facilities, avoid demonstrations, and keep departure plans flexible against airspace closures.
- Emergency care is limited outside the largest cities; police 911 or 104, ambulance 122, fire 115 in local listings.
Erbil travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A Kurdistan visa does not open federal Iraq, and sources conflict on entry through Erbil with a federal visa alone.
- Bar prices in Ankawa run several times the liquor shop price a street away.
- Any dollar price in an older guide predates the October 2026 devaluation, so re-price it in dinars.
Getting around Erbil: public transport and more
- Taxis are the city system: unmetered and cheap, so agree the price first or use a ride hailing app where it works.
- Erbil International Airport is about 7 km from the centre, a 10 to 15 minute taxi ride with the fare agreed in advance.
- For the mountains, hire a car and driver for the day, or take shared taxis between the main Kurdish cities.
- Internal checkpoints are routine: carry your passport, be patient, and do not photograph them.
