Things to do in Babylon
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Babylon
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The workable window: mild days, cold nights, the site walkable for a full morning and Borsippa climbable without dangerous heat.
Warm shoulder months sightseeable with early starts; April holds the Babylon International Festival in the years it runs.
Hot, in the mid 30s to about 40 degrees. The site is an early morning only proposition, finished by 10am.
Extreme summer heat, mean highs about 41 to 44 degrees and no rain. Outdoor sightseeing is a health risk, not a discomfort.
What's on
- Babylon International Festival Spring, usually March or April, about five days, dates vary by year
The festival of international arts and cultures held at Babylon since 1987, using the ancient theatre as its signature stage. It has run intermittently through Iraq's modern crises, so a future traveller verifies the year's edition before planning around it.
- Arbaeen pilgrimage period Safar in the Islamic calendar, around late July in 2027, moving earlier each year
Pilgrims walk through Babil province toward Karbala in vast numbers; roads fill, checkpoints multiply and every movement in the province slows. Not a Babylon event, but the province's biggest planning fact.
Best things to do in Babylon
Ishtar Gate
The reconstructed Ishtar Gate on its ancient foundations, evoking Nebuchadnezzar's blue glazed brick city entrance.
Processional Way
The ceremonial avenue through the Ishtar Gate, lined in antiquity with glazed brick lions of the goddess Ishtar.
Palace of Nebuchadnezzar II
The court and hall foundations of Nebuchadnezzar II's Southern Palace, part ancient brick and part Saddam era rebuild.
Temple of Ninmakh
A small restored temple to the mother goddess Ninmakh in the palace quarter, recently conserved and reopened.
Lion of Babylon
An ancient basalt lion trampling a fallen man, standing in the open in the palace quarter where it was found.
Babylon Theatre
The Hellenistic theatre of Greek Babylon, later used as the signature stage of the Babylon International Festival.
Etemenanki
The foundation platform of Babylon's great ziggurat, surviving only as a vast square outline in low ground.
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
The supposed site of the Hanging Gardens, where nothing is visible and the Babylon location itself is debated.
Where to stay in Babylon
Hillah centre
the only practical base at the site, simple local hotels
Hillah is about 15 minutes by car from the site gate and holds every hotel and restaurant, all of them local and budget tier.
Babylon site area
nothing bookable, stated plainly
No functioning hotel at the site could be verified: the Babylon Hotel in Hillah is listed as permanently closed and the old palace resort villas show no evidence of operating today.
Baghdad
top tier rooms and the day trip base most operators use
About 90 to 100 kilometres north, with the hotels listed in the Baghdad brief in this wave; most specialist itineraries sleep there and day-trip to Babylon.
Think twice about
- Jurf al-Sakr town
Jurf al-Sakr town in Babil province is a closed security area in the north-west of the province, not a sight, and it stays off any itinerary.
- Baghdad to Hillah highway after dark
Movement between Baghdad and Babylon is a daylight, driver-led operation in any future window, on the operator's timing, through checkpoints. No part of a Babylon trip is planned as a night drive.
- Saddam Hussein Palace interiors beyond guard permission
The palace is a looted, damaged shell. Visitors enter only where the guards of the day allow, and damaged wings, roofs and service areas are not explored independently.
Best restaurants in Babylon
Khan Mandi Restaurant
Hillah's fullest sit-down dinner, a mandi house serving shared rice and meat platters to a local family crowd.
Sumer Restaurant
Hillah's most reviewed local restaurant, serving grills, rice and stews at local prices, strongest at lunch.
Saadi abo al kass
A kass grill house serving charcoal skewers, fresh samoon bread and tea, the classic Hillah fast lunch.
Balcony Rest & Cafe - مطعم بالكوني
A restaurant and cafe in Hillah for coffee, small plates and table service, the local shape of an evening out.
Best coffee in Babylon
Coffee Factory
A modern Hillah coffee shop serving espresso drinks and desserts, among the town's best rated cafes.
Outdoor things to do in Babylon
Shatt al-Hillah
The Hillah branch of the Euphrates at Babylon and Hillah, palm groves and farmland best seen in late afternoon light.
Borsippa
Babylon's sister city 18 kilometres away, where the 47 metre ziggurat of Nabu still rises over flat farmland.
Best hotels in Babylon
Asad Babil Hotel
A plain local hotel in Hillah's Nader district, the most findable bed in town for an operator booked stay.
Al-Israa Tourist Hotel
A local tourist hotel by Safi al-Din al-Hilli Square with rooms, suites and breakfast, booked through an operator.
Almudhish
A basic hotel and restaurant complex in Hillah with wedding halls, kept as a fallback when other rooms fill.
Is Babylon expensive? What a day costs
| Budget | IQD 50,000 a person |
|---|---|
| Classic | IQD 120,000 a person |
| Splurge | IQD 275,000 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Borsippa: weeks ahead
- Book the whole Babylon day, hotels, driver, guide and site arrangements, through a specialist operator weeks ahead, and reconfirm the site, museum and palace access the week you travel.
- Confirm any Hillah hotel by phone through your operator that month. None of them is bookable in a normal international sense.
Is Babylon safe?
- Do not travel to Iraq as a tourist today: the risk picture is countrywide, Babil province is inside it, and Jurf al-Sakr town is a closed security area. Save this for a future trip.
- Summer heat is a safety issue in itself: mean highs reach about 44 degrees and peaks go higher, the site has no shade, and midday on the plain in summer is dangerous.
- Emergency and consular services are limited, so plan every day around that.
Babylon travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Babylon Hotel in Hillah is listed as permanently closed, and the Saddam palace resort villas show no evidence of operating. Any listing selling either as bookable is a trap.
- Photographs of the blue Ishtar Gate in Berlin are not Babylon. The gate on site is a reconstruction, and any seller presenting it as the original is misleading you.
- Do not photograph checkpoints, soldiers, police, site security or bridges. Ask before photographing people, and follow guard instructions at the palace without argument.
Getting around Babylon: public transport and more
- Babylon is a driver-led day: a vetted local driver and guide, agreed routes, checkpoints, and daylight movement between Baghdad, Hillah and the site.
- Inside the site you walk. Distances are short but shadeless, so the circuit is done early, with the museum and Hillah held for the heat of the day.
- Borsippa is a separate driver-led excursion of about 18 kilometres south-west of Babylon, combined with the site in one morning, never improvised.
