Think twice about
- Basra province border strips within 5km of Iran, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait
The highest risk ground in the province. Do not route marsh, desert or cross country trips through them.
- Rural and desert outskirts off main roads
Landmines and unexploded weapons remain in some rural and border areas. Stay on main roads and take local advice.
- Protest sites and large gatherings anywhere in Basra
Protests are common in Basra and can turn violent and close roads. Leave the area and follow your guide.

Is Basra safe?
- Leisure travel is not currently possible in any ordinary sense; visits run as organised, guided trips with pre-cleared routes.
- In summer, stay indoors from about 9am to sunset; Basra has recorded 53.9 degrees and highs above 50 degrees occur.
- Drink bottled water only, never photograph checkpoints, military, police, ports or bridges, and dress modestly at all times.
Basra travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Agree the full masgouf price by fish size and weight before the fish goes on the fire.
- A cheap room with broken air conditioning in Basra is a false economy; inspect the room and cooling first.
- Do not treat the Corniche or the old town as a preserved tourist district; both are working, decaying parts of a port city.
Getting around Basra: public transport and more
- Use a hotel arranged car or a driver hired by the day; there is no visitor usable public transport system.
- Agree every taxi fare before departure and expect checkpoints on all intercity and excursion routes.
- Basra International Airport is roughly 20 to 30 minutes from central hotels, traffic and checkpoints permitting.
