Things to do in Asunción
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Asunción
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: dry, cooler winter and shoulder. Daytime highs roughly 18-28°C, lower humidity, least punishing walking weather, best for Chaco and Ybycuí. July is driest and most comfortable. Winter nights can drop to 5-10°C on cold fronts, pack a real jacket.
Shoulder: highs 24-33°C, rising humidity, short intense downpours. Still good trips if you time the day around heat and storms. Holy Week (March/April) is a major domestic holiday, city empties toward family towns, some businesses close, but distinctive cultural window.
Worst months for comfort: highs routinely 33-38°C+, intense humidity, heavy afternoon storms. Paradoxically also festival and lake season. Go only for a specific event and build every day around shade, water and air-conditioning. Heat illness is the real hazard.

Where to stay in Asunción
Villa Morra / Carmelitas / Recoleta / Manora (wider Villa Morra zone)
All-round base, modern dining, nightlife, shopping and safe-feeling streets
Holds the best restaurants, Paseo Carmelitas nightlife, the three big malls, most modern hotels and walkable streets. Ride-hail 15-25 min west to sightsee the centre and return east for dinner.
Las Lomas / Aviadores del Chaco corridor
Business travel, airport ease, corporate dining and modern hotels
WTC towers, Sheraton/Aloft/Dazzler hotels, Paseo La Galería dining, about 20 minutes to the airport. More corporate and car-scaled than Villa Morra but contiguous with it.
Historic Centre (Palma core)
Short, history-first stays with eyes open to evening emptiness and pickpocket risk
The core walk and Costanera at your door, Palmaroga and Hotel Guaraní make 1-2 nights viable. Trade: centre empties after dark, ride-hail east most evenings, and dinner choice is thin.
Las Mercedes / Santísima Trinidad axis
Food-led repeat visitors willing to ride-hail everywhere
Calmer, greener streets around Tierra Colorada and Mburicao, with Factoría boutique hotel. Excellent for a visitor who prioritises dining in characterful neighbourhoods over walking distance.
Lambaré / Yacht & Golf Club
Golf trips and resort-weekend decompress, not sightseeing
Golf course, pools, river grounds and hotel on site. Accept a commute for every city dinner and sight, works as a final-night decompress or dedicated golf trip, not as a general base.
Think twice about
- La Chacarita (Barrio Ricardo Brugada)
Consistently flagged in Canadian government guidance and local reporting for higher crime, poverty and uneven infrastructure. Do not base or wander solo with a phone out. Visit Chacarita Alta community art only with a daytime local guide if at all.
- The immediate Costanera/port fringe and quiet centre streets after dark
Emptiness rather than a named bad neighbourhood: poorly lit riverfront edges, isolated blocks and cash-machine corners concentrate petty-crime reporting. Visit by day and at busy sunset, don't sleep on the fringe.
- Mercado 4's immediate blocks as a base
Great market by day; noisy, chaotic and pickpocket-dense surroundings with no hotel stock worth choosing. Sleep in Villa Morra or centre and visit mid-morning.
- Far Greater-Asunción commuter towns: San Lorenzo, Fernando de la Mora, Limpio, Mariano Roque Alonso, Ñemby, Villa Elisa
Canadian guidance flags elevated crime in several of these districts. More simply: distance and traffic, you will spend the trip commuting into the city you came to see. Check the map before booking suspiciously cheap listings sold as Asunción.

Is Asunción safe?
- Paraguay is US State Department Level 1 (lowest tier). Asunción calmer than Rio, Bogotá or Buenos Aires, violent crime against visitors is rare.
- Real risks are petty: phone/bag snatching (including motorbike pairs), pickpocketing in Mercado 4/the centre/at ATMs, theft on Costanera once it empties.
- Base in Villa Morra/Carmelitas or a main-street centre hotel. Phones discreet, Bolt/Uber after dark, no solo wandering in Chacarita/port fringe/quiet centre streets at night, valuables in the safe.
- Carry a passport copy (original in safe), ID checks are routine.
- Bottled water for drinking is the cautious default.
- Don't visit Filadelfia/Chaco park country without a guide.
Asunción travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Palacio de López interior, there is no public tour; enjoy it from the Costanera.
- Mall-only Asunción, the centre walk, Museo del Barro and one day trip are the trip.
- Mercado 4 as a casual solo camera-around-neck wander, go prepared or guided, or choose La Recova.
- Midday summer sightseeing, the failure mode of every bad review is a 1pm walk in 38°C; sightsee 8-11am and after 4pm, siesta/pool in between.
- Ciudad del Este / Iguazú as day trips, 5-6+ hours each way; they are overnights, not excursions.
- Airport/street money-changing at poor rates when bank ATMs and Palma casas de cambio exist.
- Cheap whole-apartment listings with no reviews, no street address and off-platform payment, book through a platform with recourse or a named hotel.
Getting around Asunción: public transport and more
- Ride-hailing is the system: Bolt usually cheapest, Uber widely available, MUV also operates. Airport (ASU, Luque) is 20 min from eastern barrios, 30 from centre.
- Walk freely in Villa Morra/Carmelitas and busy centre streets by day. After dark, ride-hail door-to-door.
- Buses are very cheap but unsigned/confusing, only with a local or a worked-out route.
- Street taxis: agree the fare or insist on the meter (foreigner pricing is the recurring complaint).
- Self-driving not recommended for a short stay.
