Things to do in Zhuhai
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Zhuhai
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, with November the showcase: dry, around 20 to 24 degrees, and the ferries and views at their most reliable.
Cool, quiet and cheap, pleasant for the city and morning tea, with a grey sea and swimming only for the hardy.
Warming but foggy and humid in the returning south wind, when sea views can vanish for days.
The hard season of heavy rain, peak heat and humidity, with July and August the wettest months.
Typhoon window, roughly June to October, when island sailings can be cancelled at short notice.
What's on
- Airshow China 7-13 December 2026
China's largest airshow, biennial in Zhuhai and usually held in November in even years, with the 16th edition rescheduled to December 2026.
- Macau International Fireworks Display Contest mid September to early October
Displays fire over the Macau water and are best watched from the Shizimen and Wanzai waterfront and its sea view hotels.
- Chinese New Year January or February, dates vary
National transport is at its most strained and many small restaurants close for the holiday itself.
- Golden Week early October
Chimelong, the island ferries and hotels are at their most crowded and expensive of the year.
Best things to do in Zhuhai
Chimelong Ocean Kingdom
A world scale ocean park in Hengqin, with a whale shark hall, serious coasters and a fireworks night show over the lake.
Zhuhai Grand Theatre
The Sun and Moon shell halls on Yeli Island, best seen lit at blue hour and best experienced from a seat inside.
Lovers' Road
Zhuhai's seafront boulevard and cycle path, the way the whole city is experienced rather than a single sight.
Zhuhai Fisher Girl
The city's granite symbol on a reef in Xianglu Bay, a five minute photo stop that anchors the best central walk.
Jingshan Park
A 148 metre hill behind Jida with a cableway, a summit panorama over Xianglu Bay and a mountain slide back down.
Beishan Village
A preserved village of ancestral halls and brick lanes filled with small cafes, Zhuhai's best surviving old fabric.
Tangjiawan Ancient Town
Quiet Republican era lanes and ancestral halls in Tangjia, paired with the calm northern coast for a slow half day.
The New Yuan Ming Palace
Free recreations of Beijing's Old Summer Palace, included here with an honest verdict that most visitors should skip it.
Where to stay in Zhuhai
Jida / Xiangzhou waterfront
first trip, all-round base
On Lovers' Road, walkable to the Fisher Girl, Yeli Island and Jingshan Park, midway between Gongbei and Tangjia.
Shizimen / Wanzai
Macau-facing luxury and fireworks nights
Big international hotels across the channel from Cotai, with Macau skyline views and a short ride to Gongbei Port.
Hengqin
Chimelong Ocean Kingdom trips, especially with children
Sleeping by the park saves the daily cross city ride, but the area is a new resort zone thin on street life.
Tangjiawan
slow stays, second visits and Lakewood golf
University town calm with the ancient town, Qi'ao, the best mainland beach and the city's top ranked resort hotel.
Gongbei
early Macau crossings and train connections only
Maximum border convenience at Zhuhai Station and Gongbei Port, with minimum charm for a holiday base.
Dong'ao Island
one luxury resort night
A ferry-served island stay where the resort is the destination, with no credible mid or cheap tier on the island.
Think twice about
- Gongbei Port plaza area
A border machine of immense pedestrian volume, port commerce and touts, built for throughput rather than evenings. Fine for a transit night, wrong for a seaside holiday base.

Is Zhuhai safe?
- Typhoons and severe rain from about June to October can cancel ferries and close the coast path, so obey closure notices.
- Heat and humidity from May to September punish midday exertion, especially for children and older travellers.
- Swim at lifeguarded beaches, respect flags, and treat unguarded island coves as open water.
- Watch bags and phones in the Gongbei Port crush and in night market crowds.
Zhuhai travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Avoid touting seafood stalls near Lovers' Road and the Fisher Girl, and confirm price per jin, cooking fee and total before anything is cooked.
- Wanzai Seafood Street charges a documented premium over local markets, so agree every price in advance or use Baitengtou Market instead.
- At the New Yuan Ming Palace, decline fortune telling and calligraphy add ons whose prices are revealed late.
- Do not compress Wailingding into a rushed day trip inside its short ferry window when an overnight is the real experience.
Getting around Zhuhai: public transport and more
- Zhuhai has no metro, so use buses, DiDi, metered taxis and shared bikes along the flat coast path.
- Jida to Hengqin or Tangjiawan are proper rides, and Doumen is a half day commitment, not a detour.
- Ferries for Dong'ao, Wailingding and Guishan leave mainly from Xiangzhou Port, and bridge cruises from Jiuzhou Port.
- Zhuhai, Macau and Hong Kong are three separate immigration zones, so check visa and entry status for each.
