Superb modern hotels and malls by the lake, 25 to 40 minutes from the Gusu gardens.
Yangcheng Lake / Taihu
a resort night, crab season, spa or golf
Come for crab, a spa weekend or golf with a car: as a sightseeing base it strands you an hour out.
Think twice about
- Suzhou Bei North Station and Xiangcheng industrial belt
Rail and industrial zone 30 to 45 minutes north of Gusu with nothing to walk to at night.
- Suzhou Xinqu and Huqiu far-west new area
Fine for a factory visit, wrong for gardens: sold on price and far from the old city.
- Directly on Pingjiang Road or Shantang main stretch
Safe and lovely but noisy until late from photos, music and scooters: sleep one lane back.
- Wujiang and Taihu New City, Suzhou Bay
Separate southern district 45-plus minutes from Gusu, marketed as Suzhou but a daily commute error.

Is Suzhou safe?
- Suzhou is very safe for violent crime, including at night in Gusu and around Jinji Lake.
- Watch e-bikes and delivery scooters on lane corners and canal edges, which are often unrailed.
- Heat, meiyu rain and damp winter cold are the health risks: gardens early, indoors at midday.
- Emergency: 110 police, 119 fire, 120 ambulance. Carry your passport for ticket checks.
Suzhou travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Silk factory and embroidery institute sales stops: a demonstration ending in a hard-sell showroom.
- Fake or bathed Yangcheng crabs: eat in season at the lake, look for the tag and agree price first.
- Viral crab-roe noodle hype shops on tourist streets charge splurge prices for a photogenic bowl.
- Five gardens in a day causes garden fatigue: two majors plus one minor is the ceiling.
Getting around Suzhou: public transport and more
- Arrive at Suzhou Station for Gusu, not Suzhou Bei. Shanghai Hongqiao trains take about 25 to 35 minutes.
- Metro plus walking plus DiDi is the whole system: metro is cheap and signed in English via Alipay QR.
- Set up Alipay and WeChat Pay before arrival, carry cash backup and show drivers Chinese names.
- Use official canal piers at Shantang, Pingjiang and Panmen for fixed-price boat tickets.
