Things to do in Zhangye
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Zhangye
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best window overall: summer rain deepens the Danxia colours, the balloon season runs, and Shandan grass is green.
Photographers' choice in September and October, with cooler air, lower sun and fewer crowds outside Golden Week.
Good shoulder weather in May, but the Labour Day holiday in early May is a domestic travel peak.
Dry, windy spring with occasional dust events, thinner crowds and low prices.
Cold, quiet winter with muted colours, January lows around minus 16C at night, and some gate businesses closed.
What's on
- Labour Day Golden Week early May
A domestic travel peak when Danxia platforms, trains and hotels strain.
- Danxia balloon flight season 1 June to 15 October
Tethered balloon, glider and helicopter experiences operate in this window, all weather dependent.
- National Day Golden Week 1 to 7 October
Peak autumn light meets peak domestic crowds; book rooms and drivers well ahead.
- Spring Festival late January to February, varies by year
Cold and quiet, with some small restaurants and services closed over the holiday.
Best things to do in Zhangye
Zhangye Danxia National Geopark
Banded red, orange and yellow hills seen from boardwalk platforms, most vivid at sunset and just after rain.
Zhangye Danxia In-Depth Exploration
A pricier ticket beyond the standard platforms, for photographers who want deeper, quieter Danxia ground.
Binggou Danxia Scenic Area
Palace-like and window-lattice rock formations in a quieter valley, more sculpture than colour wash.
Dafo Temple
China's largest indoor reclining clay Buddha, about 35 metres long, in a Western Xia hall in the city centre.
Muta Temple
A nine-storey octagonal wooden pagoda near Dafo Temple, best as a short walk-by and climb in the old centre.
Zhangye Museum
Free, modern Silk Road orientation for the Hexi Corridor, with a passport needed to register at entry.
Bell and Drum Tower
The old centre landmark at the crossroads, a navigation point for the Dafo Temple and night market streets.
Where to stay in Zhangye
Ganzhou old centre
first stay, food and temples on foot
The Bell and Drum Tower grid puts Dafo Temple, the museum, food streets and night markets in walking reach.
West of centre near Zhangye West Station
chain standard and early trains
The newest chain hotels and the easiest high-speed departures, in blander streets a taxi ride from dinner.
Danxia Town and the park gates
sunrise and sunset photography
Sleep by the Colorful Danxia gates for dawn entry and a short return after sunset, with thin dining.
Think twice about
- Danxia Town as a sole multi-sight base
Superb for the park but wrong for everything else, with long drives to Mati Si and Pingshanhu and little to eat at night.
- Isolated airport and expressway strip properties
Fine for one transit night, but no walkable food and a taxi needed for every meal and driver rendezvous.
- Shandan town as a Zhangye base
The horse farm deserves its own overnight; basing in Shandan doubles driving to Danxia and the city sights.

A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Zhangye Danxia National Geopark: a few days ahead
- Zhangye Danxia In-Depth Exploration: a few days ahead
- Shandan Army Horse Breeding Farm: a few days ahead
- Zhangye Huachen International Hotel: a few days ahead
- Danxia Pearl Hotel: a few days ahead
- Kaoshan Daying Camp: a few days ahead
- In July and August, book Danxia-gate stays and city rooms at least a week ahead, earlier for Golden Weeks.
- Good drivers are the scarce resource in peak weeks; reserve through your hotel and agree route and hours first.
- Mati Si special caves are the one sight item to arrange ahead through a driver or agency.
- The museum is free with a passport, and standard sights otherwise sell tickets at the gate and on Chinese platforms.
Is Zhangye safe?
- Sun and dry air are the main risks: the Danxia parks and canyon have no shade, so carry water, a hat and sunscreen.
- Summer days above 30C can end near 16C, and Mati Si and Shandan run colder and windier, so carry layers on every excursion.
- Winter is severe, with January night lows around minus 16C, so winter visits need real cold-weather clothing.
- Stay on boardwalks at Danxia, never fly a drone there, and carry your passport for museums, hotels and trains.
Zhangye travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Midday Danxia under flat light is the classic let-down: time the park for sunrise, sunset or just after rain.
- Expect real banded hills, not the neon saturation of edited photographs.
- Visit Binggou before the Colorful Danxia, or the quieter park reads as an anticlimax.
- Eat full meals in Ganzhou and only snacks at the Danxia gates, where restaurants serve a captive market.
Getting around Zhangye: public transport and more
- Hire a private car and driver for the day; Zhangye's sights form three spokes west, northeast and south from the city.
- Buses serve the Colorful Danxia west gate cheaply, but the last buses back leave before sunset, so golden hour needs a car.
- There is no reliable bus between Binggou and the Colorful Danxia; shared taxis fill the gap.
- Zhangye West is the high-speed station; Lanzhou and Xining are roughly three to four hours away by high-speed rail.
