Is Yuanyang Terraces safe?
- Mainland China carries a risk of arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including exit bans; most visits are trouble free.
- Narrow ridge roads, frequent fog and rainy season landslips are the local risks: use an experienced local driver and avoid night ridge drives in fog where you can.
- Terrace paths are steep and slippery when wet; carry small cash notes for markets, minibuses and village fees.
Yuanyang Terraces travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Sleeping in Nansha while paying for the platforms gives you the worst of both bases.
- Arriving at Duoyishu at sunrise itself in peak season means the best platform spots are already taken.
- Agree any portrait photo payment before shooting, and keep off wet terrace bunds in hard shoes.
Getting around Yuanyang Terraces: public transport and more
- Chartering a car with a driver is the standard way to string the viewpoints together; agree route, sunrise start and price per car before setting off.
- Minibuses run between Xinjie and the villages for a few yuan a leg and are the budget fallback.
- No direct train serves Yuanyang: bus from Kunming South toward Xinjie or Nansha, or train to Jianshui then a bus up to Xinjie.
