Things to do in Yinchuan
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Yinchuan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Cold core of winter, January highs around minus 1 C and lows around minus 14 C, vines buried and Sand Lake frozen.
Warming dust season, with spring winds and sand-bearing days that can wipe out Helan views and outdoor plans.
First good window, warm, dry and sunny, Sand Lake birds and reeds at their best and long Lanshan evenings.
Hot peak with the most rain of the year, still only about 40 to 55 mm a month, and the fullest domestic crowds.
Best window overall, clear and dry, grape harvest in September, autumn migration, and tombs in their best light.
Winter returns, vines are buried against the freeze, outdoor sights empty and hotels get cheap.
What's on
- Grape harvest in the Helan foothills September
Harvest across the eastern Helan foothills, the busiest and most interesting month at working wineries.
- Sand Lake bird migration Spring and autumn migration seasons
Large numbers of migratory birds, including cranes and ducks, stop at Sand Lake in spring and again in autumn.
