Things to do in Yantai
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Yantai
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, warm with long days, the best seafood succession and the sea becoming swimmable by late June.
Peak beach season, hottest and most humid with the warmest sea, fullest beaches and jellyfish. Book everything.
Cold, windy winter with snow on the old streets and the lowest prices. Museums and Lu banquets carry the trip.
Cool spring shoulder season, good for hills, museums and Penglai without crowds, before the sea warms.
Late autumn, crisp and quiet after apple harvest, with wild seafood still good and winter wind arriving.

The best sand and the newest resorts, at the cost of a long ride to the old centre sights.
Penglai and Changdao
Penglai Pavilion and the islands
Split the trip with a night or two here instead of day tripping 70 km each way from Zhifu.
Think twice about
- Yantai Station perimeter
A transit zone of touts, overpriced seafood pitches and early noise, with nothing to walk to at night. Sleep in Zhifu proper instead.
- Development Zone as a sights base
Not a safety issue but a dead zone at night outside the resorts, and a long ride to every old centre dinner and sight.
- Penglai as a single base for all of Yantai
Quiet early outside the scenic area and 70 km from Zhifu, so a single base makes a full Yantai trip exhausting. Split the stay.

Is Yantai safe?
- Yantai is a safe city and walking at night in Zhifu, Laishan and Golden Beach is normal.
- Swim only in guarded bathing zones in season and take island boats only in settled weather.
- In winter, treat wind off the Bohai as an exposure risk on cliffs, hills and boardwalks.
Yantai travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Confirm seafood species, price per jin and total before cooking, and avoid touted houses near stations and gates.
- Skip bundled Penglai day tours that add cruises and castles item by item and quietly double the cost.
- Treat Wencheng Castle as a photo stop, not a working winery, and Fisherman's Wharf as a promenade, not a half day.
Getting around Yantai: public transport and more
- Cluster each day in one zone, Zhifu, Laishan or Golden Beach, because the zones are 25 to 50 minutes apart.
- Ride the No. 17 coastal bus for orientation, the 617 for Yangma Island, and use Didi or metered taxis for the rest.
- Take the high speed train to Penglai or Longkou stations for the northwest, and Muping Station for Yangma Island.
- Ferries to Changdao leave from Penglai Pengchang port and take about 40 to 45 minutes, weather permitting.
