Is Vladivostok safe?
- Central Vladivostok is orderly day to day, watch for pickpockets in crowded markets and station areas and use apps to avoid taxi overcharging.
- Steep icy pavements, aggressive traffic, unfenced cliffs and sea ice injure more visitors than people do, only walk ice where locals clearly are.
- Do not photograph warships, naval facilities, checkpoints or soldiers at close range and do not fly drones as a foreign visitor.
- Keep documents in order and avoid political discussion or demonstrations, consular help is severely limited and dual nationals are treated as Russian only.
- Foreign Visa, Mastercard and Amex cards do not work in Russia, budget as cash based and use bottled or filtered water for drinking.
Vladivostok travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The small city Vladivostok Aquarium on Batareynaya is dated and small, go to the Russky Oceanarium or skip aquariums.
- Always confirm crab price per weight and approximate total before a whole crab is cooked, at any tier.
- Vladivostok Circus is weakly rated and not a visitor priority ahead of the Mariinsky.
- Tokarevsky Lighthouse is a 30 minute pleasure, not a half day expedition or premium standalone tour.
- Avoid Glass Beach at midday on a summer weekend for crowds and litter, go on a weekday morning.
- Use Yandex Go or a hotel car instead of station and airport taxi touts.
- Shopping malls are ordinary and skippable, spend centre hours at Sportivnaya Market, Millionka and the embankments, and buy souvenirs in supermarkets.
Getting around Vladivostok: public transport and more
- Walk the centre and taxi everything else, the centre is compact but steep and the funicular saves the Eagle's Nest climb.
- Buses are cheap and frequent but routes are in Russian, use Yandex Maps or 2GIS offline and have small cash ready.
- Use the Yandex Go app for fixed honest taxi pricing and agree a Russky day hire in the app or with your hotel in advance.
- Airport is 45 to 55 km out near Artem, allow 60 to 90 minutes by road or use Aeroexpress where schedules fit.
- Ferries to Popov and Reyneke islands run seasonally, confirm return times before you sail.
