Things to do in Kaliningrad
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kaliningrad
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months with late spring blossom, long evenings, an empty green Spit and a still cold sea.
The connoisseur month, often the driest and sunniest stretch, with warmest sea and amber storm season beginning.
Peak and warmest, with every beach and terrace alive and every queue and Spit traffic jam at maximum.
Shoulder months, unsettled and good for a museum and food city weekend at low prices. October is the last plausible Spit month.
Worst months, short grey days, Baltic wind and sleet, offset by empty museums, concerts and festive markets in late December.
What's on

Where to stay in Kaliningrad
Fish Village / Kant Island / Pregolya riverfront
first trip, all-round base
Cathedral, World Ocean Museum, best restaurants and the evening promenade all within a short walk.
Centre / Victory Square & Leninsky Prospekt
practical base and value

repeat visitors and slow travellers
The beautiful villa district, quiet and green, but with thin dining and a longer walk to the core sights.
Think twice about
- Yuzhny (South) Station, Kievskaya and Moskovsky Prospekt industrial south bank
Rail lines, wholesale traffic, derelict plots and poorly lit arterial roads. Bleak and disconnected, so you taxi everywhere.
- Oktyabrsky Island / stadium district
A construction and car park landscape around the stadium, isolated and windswept on non match nights and a taxi from every restaurant.
- Outer Soviet high-rise districts, including far Moskovsky and Leningradsky and Selma
Safe and lived in but entirely residential, a long bus ride from everything you came for, with no dining scene.
- Baltiysk
A military town with access sensitivity for foreign citizens, so not a sensible place to base.

Kaliningrad travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Amber fakes are the main trap. Buy from the Amber Museum shop, the Combine shop in Yantarny or named jewellers, and ask for a receipt.
- Fish Village view terrace restaurants can be overpriced and mediocre. The view is free from the embankment.
- The Dancing Forest is a short stop inside a Spit day, not a standalone destination.
- Pre 2022 guidebooks are outdated on sights, cards, apps and the demolished House of Soviets.
Getting around Kaliningrad: public transport and more
- Walk the core. Fish Village to Victory Square is a short walk, the Amber Museum a little further.
- Trams 3 and 5 and the bus and trolleybus network cover the rest, with nominal fares.
- Yandex Go is the taxi app that works. Set it up before arrival and expect to pay cash or Mir.
- Commuter trains from Severny station are the coast route, to Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk.
- Khrabrovo airport bus 244-E runs to the centre and South station, or pre book a transfer.
