Things to do in Vigan
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Vigan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: dry season, with December and January the coolest walking weather of the year.
January is arguably the best single month, dry and cool with the city fiesta and Longganisa Festival.
Dry but properly hot, and Holy Week brings processions, crowds and full hotels.
Hottest month and the rains begin, but the first week brings the Binatbatan festival.
Rainy season peaking July to September, when Ilocos can take direct typhoon hits, with disrupted roads.
Late October improves and ends with the Raniag Twilight Festival around All Saints Day.
What's on
- Vigan City Fiesta and Longganisa Festival third week of January, around 22 to 25 January
Cityhood anniversary and feast of St. Paul, with parades, nightly shows and longganisa street dancing.
- Semana Santa Holy Week, March or April
Processions of life size saints on carrozas and Visita Iglesia through the heritage streets.
- Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts first week of May, peaking around 1 to 3 May

Where to stay in Vigan
Heritage Village, around Calle Crisologo
best base, evenings in the core

Plaza and downtown edge
value, still walkable
A few streets out from Calle Crisologo around the plazas, plainer streets and better prices.
Think twice about
- National Highway and far southern Quezon Avenue strip
Truck and tricycle noise from early morning, no evening street life and no walkable dining, so every outing becomes a tricycle negotiation.
- Bantay highway strip as a base
Fine to visit for the bell tower, but as a base it is a highway strip outside the walkable heritage core.
- Mindoro beach area as a base
Good for a sunset visit, but a local residential shore with minimal visitor facilities after dark.

- Baluarte is overrated for adults, and the river cruise is the most consistently panned paid activity in town.
- Do not accept a per person tour rate for a short point to point kalesa hop.
- Four or five nights in Vigan alone is too long for most travellers, so use the excursions or move on.
Getting around Vigan: public transport and more
- Walk the heritage core, both plazas and most museums, which sit within a few blocks.
- Use tricycles for Bantay, Pagburnayan, Hidden Garden and Mindoro Beach, and agree the fare before you ride.
- For a kalesa tour, agree the total price and the route before you climb in.
- Reach Vigan by bus from Manila in about eight to ten hours, or fly to Laoag and continue about 90 minutes south.
