Things to do in Iloilo City
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Iloilo City
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months overall. Dry season, festival dense, calmest seas for Guimaras and Gigantes. January is Dinagyang priced.
Quiet value shoulder. Rains easing, Christmas lights up, ordinary hotel prices.
Peak heat and mango season. Manggahan Festival on Guimaras makes it the island's best and busiest month.
Wet season edges. City sights still work, island trips need spare days for rough straits.
Worst months. Peak monsoon rain, highest flooding and boat cancellation risk, lowest prices.
What's on

Ati-ati tribe street dancing for the Santo Nino around the City Proper. Book hotels 3 to 6 months ahead.

Is Iloilo City safe?
- One of the safest large cities in the Philippines. Watch belongings in markets, jeepneys and Dinagyang crowds.
- Use Grab at night rather than walking dark inter-district roads. Care around port areas late.
- Wet season brings flooded low streets and cancelled island boats. Check forecasts and never pressure a boatman to sail.
- No district has a severe homelessness or drug scene problem. Cautions here are about lighting and logistics, not danger zones.
Iloilo City travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Eating batchoy only in a mall. Market first at Netong's or Deco's, Atria branches second.
- Gigantes sold as an easy day trip. It is a 4am to 8pm expedition. Overnight if you can.
- Villa Beach for swimming. Grey sand and murky water, great restaurants. Swim on Guimaras or Gigantes.
- The Queen Siopao solo. It is a seven inch bun built to share.
Getting around Iloilo City: public transport and more
- Grab is the visitor default at roughly 65 to 150 pesos in the city. Taxis are plentiful and metered.
- Guimaras boats leave Ortiz Wharf every 15 to 30 minutes, about 15 to 20 minutes and around 40 pesos. Fast craft reaches Bacolod in about an hour.
- Walk inside each district and Grab between them. Modern jeepneys are cheap once you know the Villa, La Paz and Jaro routes.
- Airport is 30 to 45 minutes out. Shuttle van to SM City around 100 pesos, taxi or Grab in the 350 to 500 peso band.
