- Expect rain slick pavements, winter river rises and weather called boats and ferries in bad weather.
- Drive gravel roads slowly after storms and never schedule a flight on the same day as the Alerce road.
Valdivia travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Kunstmann hall is worth the trip but the standalone guided tour divides reviewers.
- Eat lunch at the Mercado Municipal but shop at the Feria Fluvial, as the hall craft stalls are generic.

- Niebla beaches are for walking and sunset, not swimming, with cold water and rough surf.
Getting around Valdivia: public transport and more
- Walk the compact centre and Costanera, and cross the bridge on foot to Isla Teja in 10 to 15 minutes.
- Buses and colectivos reach Niebla, the university and the airport road cheaply, with small cash needed.
- Tourist boats at Muelle Schuster run the fort circuit and the Punucapa navigation, so compare two operators before paying.
- Pichoy Airport is about 25 to 30 km away, so a taxi or pre booked transfer is the low stress option with luggage.
