Think twice about

Industrial land and the landfill zone with isolated pockets, poor lighting and nothing to walk to. No reason for a visitor to sleep there.
- Upper cerros and campamento fringe
Informal hillside settlements with steep unlit access and no hotels or restaurants. A view to look at, not a base.
- Terminal Rodoviario and port industrial edge at night

- Centro after hours as an evening base
A working downtown that empties after office hours, with few dinner options and dark commercial streets. Base in the south if evenings matter.

- Enjoy Antofagasta: weeks ahead

- Book hotels early on cancellable rates because weekday mining rotations fill rooms and spike prices with no tourist season logic.
- Register online in advance for the free Saturday Paranal tours via ESO, in weeks not days, and build the stay around the slot.
- Reserve Amares and Mu Grill House on weekend nights, and check CONAF status before driving to Morro Moreno.
- In February and around Fiestas Patrias, book hotels, buses and restaurants early regardless of the weekday.
Is Antofagasta safe?
- Keep phones and cameras put away on the street and be alert in markets and around the bus terminal.
- Leave nothing visible in a parked rental car at La Portada and beach car parks, and use official taxis or apps at night.
- Swim only at lifeguarded beaches in season and respect marejadas heavy swell warnings on the costanera.
- Carry sun protection and plenty of water on all desert excursions, where there is no shade and signal is patchy.
Antofagasta travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- San Pedro tours sold as Antofagasta tours on aggregator pages are 300 plus km inland and are not day trips from the city.
- Plaza Colón is an orientation stop inside the historic walk, not a sight to build a morning around.
- Eat at the Terminal Pesquero or in the south rather than on the Balneario Municipal food strip, which is tourist priced.
- La Portada at midday by tour bus is the worst version, so go late afternoon and self driven if you can.
Getting around Antofagasta: public transport and more
- Walk the centre and historic quarter, and use colectivos, city buses, taxis or Uber and Cabify between the north and south sectors.
- The airport is about 25 km north, so allow 30 to 40 minutes and book a transfer or taxi rather than relying on a bus.
- Rent a car if you will take two or more excursions, since Morro Moreno, Chacabuco, the Mano, Hornitos and Paranal are all car trips.
- Carry water in the car on desert highways and fill the tank before Ruta 5 or Ruta 1, where stations are far apart.
