Is Utrecht safe?
- Bike theft is the real visitor crime. Double lock and use guarded bike parking, including the free station bike park.
- Petty theft is the realistic risk, including bags in cafes and phones on wharf terraces.
- Keep city wits on around the station late at night and use staffed, well lit entrances.
- Never boat under the influence, it is enforced on the canals.
Utrecht travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Basing in Amsterdam and doing Utrecht in three hours misses the wharves, evenings and restaurants.
- Hoog Catharijne is a competent station mall, not a destination.
- Do not park a loaded car in the Hoog Catharijne P1 car park, where break ins are repeatedly reported.
- Check implausibly cheap listings, they may actually be in Kanaleneiland, Overvecht, Nieuwegein or Houten.
Getting around Utrecht: public transport and more
- Walk the centre and cycle everything else.
- Utrecht Centraal has direct trains to Amsterdam in about 27 to 30 minutes and to Schiphol in about 30 minutes.
- Fly to Schiphol and take the train. A taxi at about 100 euros is money burned.
