Things to do in Rotterdam
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Rotterdam
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dark, windy museum and food season, cheapest hotels except during IFFR in late January.
Best all round. Terraces reopen, Keukenhof runs, Marathon and Kings Day fall in April, late April to May is best.
Peak season, light until late in June, swimming and beach days, North Sea Jazz and Carnival in July, book everything.
September is the sweet spot, World Port Days in early September, October museum shows, November is dark and wet.
What's on
- International Film Festival Rotterdam late Jan to early Feb

Think twice about
- Rotterdam-Zuid beyond Katendrecht
Deprived residential districts with few hotels or visitor restaurants, poorer night lighting and higher petty crime around Zuidplein.
- Rotterdam Centraal station perimeter and Eendrachtsplein
Visible street homelessness and street drinking at night and petty nuisance. Use main staffed entrances and sleep on quieter streets.
- Far outskirts including Alexanderpolder, Ommoord and Hoogvliet

Is Rotterdam safe?
- Bike theft is endemic. Use two locks always and never buy a suspiciously cheap street bike.
- Trams and cycle lanes are the main physical danger. Look both ways at every kerb.
- No swimming in the Maas, a working river with strong currents. Use designated lakes and beaches only.
- Watch bags in crowds at Centraal and Blaak and ignore anyone offering to check money or a passport.
- Emergency number is 112. Non emergency police is 0900-8844.
Rotterdam travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A full sit down meal inside Markthal at peak lunch. Graze the stalls or eat on Meent instead.
- Cube Houses as a half day. It is 20 minutes inside and 5 for photos outside.
- Splashtours amphibious bus as your harbour trip. Spido or a water taxi teaches more for less.
- Hop on hop off buses. Rotterdam is compact and metro served, so they are the slowest option.
- Lijnbaan as a sight. It is historically important but visually ordinary.
- City card bundles without maths. They only pay if you pack in several paid sights in the window.
Getting around Rotterdam: public transport and more
- Tap in and out with a contactless card on RET metro, tram and bus or you pay the maximum fare.
- Metro is the backbone. Beurs is the interchange and lines D and E serve Wilhelminapier and The Hague.
- Use separated cycle lanes, lock rentals with two locks to a fixed rack, and never walk in a cycle lane.
- Water taxis run from Leuvehaven, Hotel New York, Wilhelminapier and SS Rotterdam pontoons.
- Trains from Centraal take 15 minutes to Delft, 25 to The Hague and about 40 to Amsterdam.
- Use P+R at Kralingse Zoom or Slinge for cheap parking plus metro instead of driving in the centre.
