Things to do in Tuzla
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Tuzla
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: warm enough for the lakes, full cafe season, green hills, and softer prices in September.
Peak summer: lakes at full capacity, Kaleidoskop and the summer programme, hottest weather and fullest hotels.
Shoulder months for walkers and culture, with the film festival in October, but swimming is over.
Off season: short days, coal smoke on still days and the worst air of the year, with the cultural programme carrying the visit.
What's on
- Kaleidoskop Festival late July

- Tuzla Film Festival Mid October
A festival of South Slavic film that anchors the October cultural calendar.
- Kapija commemoration 25 May
The annual commemoration in the main square for the victims of 25 May 1995. A solemn day, not a festival.

Centre and Old Town
first trip, all round base, no car needed
Everything is within a ten minute walk: lakes, Kapija, cevapi institutions, cafes and the Korzo.
Mellain corridor
business, drivers and road trip hub
The modern business strip on the Jala river, easier parking and main roads out, a short walk or taxi to the square.
Think twice about
- Far west around Termoelektrana Tuzla power plant
Heavy industry edge with the worst winter air, essentially no visitor lodging and no reason for a visitor to sleep there.
- Airport side villages around Dubrave without a car
Cheap listings but marooned without wheels, with no evening walk and a taxi needed for every meal.

Is Tuzla safe?
- Street crime is low and the centre is busy and lit. Use licensed taxis and take care on rural roads, where drivers are fast.
- Winter air is the real issue: heating season pollution from the power plant and home coal fires can reach polluted levels, so check the air index and favour Ilincica and Konjuh on bad days.
- Travellers with asthma should take the winter air pattern seriously when choosing dates. Emergency number 112.
Tuzla travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The shopping malls west of the old town are just malls, with no reason for a visitor afternoon.
- Lake Modrac beaches vary in quality, so use named village beaches or ask locally.
- Do not build a winter trip around the Pannonian Lakes: swimming is a summer fact.
- MamaMia Origins is very good for Tuzla, not a capital city fine dining scene.
Getting around Tuzla: public transport and more
- Walk the centre: Trg Slobode to the lakes is under ten minutes and the old town is pedestrianised.
- Taxis are cheap, roughly 5 to 10 BAM across the centre. Agree the fare or ensure the meter runs.
- Day trip buses leave from Autobuska stanica: Srebrenik about 55 minutes, Srebrenica about 2 hours 45 minutes. Check timetables in person the day before.
- Carry cash in small notes for cevapi shops, bakeries, taxis, fortress tickets and parking. BAM is pegged to the euro at 1.95583.
