Things to do in Mostar
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Mostar
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is best all-round: 18 to 28 degrees, Kravice at full flow and rafting water high, with June the connoisseur's month.
Summer is hottest and busiest at 35 to 42 degrees, with swimming, daily divers and the bridge competition in late July.
Autumn is the other best: September keeps swimming and adds cliff diving, October is mild, golden, quiet and cheap.
Winter is cold, windy and quiet at 0 to 10 degrees, with some excursions paused and the bridge largely to yourself.
What's on
- Traditional Stari Most Diving Competition late July
Local divers and swallow dives, held since 1968, the single most Mostar event of the year.
- Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, Mostar Stop usually early September
Elite divers compete from a platform above Stari Most and rooms sell out: dates move by year, check before booking.
- Mostar Summer Fest late June to early July
Multi-day open-air music festival on the west side, the city's biggest party weekend.
- Mostar Blues & Rock Festival July
Smaller enthusiast-loved fixture for live-music travellers.
- Street Arts Festival Mostar September

Where to stay in Mostar

Old Town, West Bank and Kriva Ćuprija Side
romantics and repeat visitors
A fraction quieter, with the Crooked Bridge cafe cluster at your feet and the bazaar five minutes over.

drivers, train users and value

Blagaj
one-night add-on on a Herzegovina road trip
Sleep by the Buna spring with a trout dinner and the tekke at dawn, impractical as a Mostar base without a car.
Think twice about
- Far hillside suburbs above the city
Steep walk or taxi for every coffee and dinner, punishing in 40 degree heat without a car.
- Immediate Bulevar front-line strip
Not unsafe, but some blocks are ruined, unlit and traffic-dominated, a history walk rather than an evening base.
- Out-of-town roadside motels on the M-17 approaches
Listings on the Bijelo Polje, Buna and Čapljina roads sold as Mostar mean driving for everything and missing the evening Old Town.
- Unregistered cash-only apartments
Visitors must be registered and reputable places do it automatically, so a deal without a receipt is a scam filter.

Is Mostar safe?
- Mostar is safe to walk day and night in visited areas of both banks, with normal care for bags in the midday bridge crush.
- Landmines: stay on paved roads and marked paths in the countryside, never enter ruins or taped areas, and take a guide for Prenj.
- The Sniper Tower and Bulevar ruins are look-from-outside sights: interiors are unstable and entry is not permitted.
- Swim only at designated city beaches and the roped area at Kravice: the Neretva by the bridge is strong and cold.
- Summer heat reaches 40 degrees: water, a hat and a siesta-shaped day are safety equipment. Emergency number 112.
Mostar travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The bridge at 13:00 in August: go at dawn or dusk instead.
- Hawker terraces on the immediate bridge approaches have the weakest food at the highest Old Town prices.
- Mass-produced souvenir copper from the main lane: buy from a workshop you can see working in a side alley.
- Never pay to jump off the bridge: visitors have been seriously injured and the tradition is for trained club divers.
- Međugorje is a pilgrimage town: go with purpose or give the day to Kravice or Blidinje instead.
Getting around Mostar: public transport and more
- Walk: Old Town to Musala is about 10 minutes and to the stations 15 to 20, in grippy shoes for polished cobbles.
- Train to Sarajevo takes about 2 to 2.5 hours through the Neretva canyon, with a couple of departures daily.
- Buses are more frequent than trains, but Mostar has east and west stations, so confirm which one your ticket uses.
- Use signed municipal parking or a hotel lot, and never hand cash to unofficial parking attendants.
- Taxis are cheap and plentiful: agree the fare or confirm the meter, and have your hotel call one for Fortica.
