Things to do in Turku
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Turku
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Ice leaves the Aura, terraces open and archipelago services restart. Vappu fills the riverbanks: the value shoulder.
Peak season: white nights, riverboats, beaches and all island services open. Late June to early August is best.
Ruska colour, mushroom menus and low prices, but daylight collapses and island services close. November is the hardest month.
December is the Christmas City peak. January and February are deep quiet: cosy museums, ice swimming and skiing.

Where to stay in Turku
City Centre and Aura Riverfront
first trip, all-round base
Everything in the sights section is walkable, with restaurants, Market Hall and river boats at hand.
Kakolanmäki (Kakola Hill)
character and views
Quieter and elevated, with its own restaurants, brewery and spa a funicular ride from the river.
Kupittaa
families, sport and value
Park-side, greener and often cheaper, a short bus ride from the riverfront centre.
Ruissalo Island
spa, nature and a reset
Oak woods, beaches and spa quiet ten minutes out, trading walk-to-dinner choice for sea air.
Port Arthur and River West Bank
quiet, local, apartment-style stays
Historic wooden-house streets ten minutes from the river, with small hotels and guesthouses.
Naantali
high summer only
Idyllic for Moominworld, spa and archipelago trips in summer, sleepy to a fault in winter.
Think twice about
- Market Square and central station fringe late at night
Weekend drinking concentrates here after bars close: loud and occasionally confrontational, so expect noise Thursday to Saturday.
- Turku ferry port area as a base
Few hotels, limited evening food and an industrial port feel after ferries sail. Fine for transit, dull to sleep in.
- Far suburbs: Varissuo, Runosmäki and Lauste
Residential districts with no visitor accommodation and poor late transport for sightseeing. Only a risk via a mis-booked apartment.

Is Turku safe?
- Turku is exceptionally safe: realistic risks are bike theft, peak-crowd pickpocketing and late weekend drinking nuisance.
- Emergency number is 112. Tap water is safe to drink.
- In winter the real risks are ice underfoot, darkness and Baltic cold: wear grip footwear and a reflector.
Turku travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not rush Helsinki and Turku as day trips from each other: give Turku a night minimum.
- Take restaurant boats for drinks, not a serious dinner: eat at Mami instead.
- Do not museum-collect all five hill museums in a day: pick the Art Museum plus one small museum.
- Check season dates first: Moominworld, Seili and outer archipelago services are summer only.
Getting around Turku: public transport and more
- Walk first: centre sights form a river line of about 3 km from cathedral to castle.
- Use Foli buses across the region: bus 1 for airport and port, bus 8 for Ruissalo, buses 6 and 7 for Naantali.
- The Fori ferry and Kakola funicular are free. Long-distance trains currently use Kupittaa station: check your ticket.
