- Nallikari Safaris: a few days ahead
- Oulun Golf, Sankivaara: a few days ahead
- Virpiniemi Golf: a few days ahead

- Festival weekends in 2026 sell out limited centre hotels; book Lapland Hotels and De Gamlas Hem months ahead for those dates.
- Uleaborg 1881 and Hugo need reservations days to weeks ahead, especially Thursday to Saturday.
- Koivuranta private sauna slots, Salamapaja aurora nights and Nallikari husky slots book out on peak winter weekends.
- Hailuoto ferry is free but summer weekend car queues can mean missing a sailing; foot and bike boarding is easier.
- In late December daylight is roughly 3.5 to 4 hours; schedule outdoors for late morning and museums and saunas into the dark.
Is Oulu safe?
- The main hazards are weather: ice underfoot November to April, wind chill on the frozen bay, and winter darkness.
- Go onto sea ice only on marked, locally confirmed routes, never alone at night, and treat spring ice with particular respect.
- In summer use mosquito repellent at Rokua and in riverside woods at dusk, and swim sober and near shore in cold water.
- Emergency number is 112 and English is spoken widely in Oulu services.
Oulu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Guaranteed northern lights offers: aurora is possible September to April on clear nights, but coastal cloud makes it a maybe, never a promise.
- Treating the Toripolliisi statue as an attraction: it is a photo stop of about ten minutes.
- Tietomaa and the old regional museum have closed, replaced by Tiima, which opened in October 2026.
- Viking Restaurant Harald is a tourist format room when Uleaborg and Sokeri-Jussi exist; go mainly with kids who want the theming.
- Taxis for short city hops are poor value over tiny distances; walk or bike and save taxis for the airport and late Nallikari returns.
- Expecting a warm beach holiday at Nallikari: Bothnian Bay swimming stays brisk even in July.
Getting around Oulu: public transport and more
- Walk and cycle first: the centre is flat and compact and the cycle network is ploughed and gritted in winter.
- City buses cover Nallikari, the airport corridor and suburbs; buy day tickets in the app and pay by card elsewhere.
- Oulu Airport is about 20 minutes away with frequent Finnair flights to Helsinki; VR trains take about 5.5 to 6 hours, with an overnight sleeper option.
- Drive only for Rokua, Syote and Hailuoto flexibility; central parking is in the Kivisydan underground car park under Rotuaari.
