Things to do in Tuguegarao
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Tuguegarao
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The relative cool season, with cooler mornings and the best walking weather, but flood risk lingers into November.
Hot dry season, with afternoons in the high 30s, the clearest river water and the calmest Palaui crossings.
Wet and typhoon months, when Callao can close, Palaui boats may not sail, and the Cagayan River floods low areas.
The Pavvurulun Afi Festival fills the city in the week ending 16 August, in peak heat and rain.
What's on
- Pavvurulun Afi Festival Week ending 16 August
The patronal festival for St. Hyacinth, with street dancing, trade fairs, a pancit festival and torch lighting.
- Holy Week Movable, March or April
Iguig Calvary Hills and the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat fill with pilgrims, and rooms and transport tighten.

Think twice about
- Santa Ana as a Tuguegarao base
Santa Ana is three to four hours away. Base there for Palaui and the beaches, and in Tuguegarao for the city and Callao.
- Isolated rentals far from the centre
No reliable tricycle supply, and in this heat a stranded kilometre in the midday sun is a problem, not a walk.

Is Tuguegarao safe?
- Parts of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago, far from Tuguegarao, carry serious crime, terrorism, civil unrest and kidnapping risks.
- Heat illness is the main risk from March to May. Sightsee early, rest at midday, and carry water on every climb.
- Never swim or boat on a high, brown river in the wet months, follow PAGASA and local instructions, and dial 911.
Tuguegarao travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Agree the full return tricycle price for Callao in words before setting off, because visitor quotes vary widely.
- A Santa Ana trip sold as an easy day trip is the biggest disappointment risk. It is a long road day each way.
- Expect a working provincial city with a few very good old buildings, not a colonial old town on the scale of Vigan.
Getting around Tuguegarao: public transport and more
- Fly from Manila in about an hour, or take an overnight bus of roughly 10 to 12 hours.
- Tricycles are the transport system in the city and, hired by the trip, for Callao Cave. Agree every price first.
- Vans for Santa Ana take about three to four hours. Never build a same day flight on a return from Santa Ana.
