Things to do in Trashigang
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Trashigang
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring: warming days, rhododendron bloom on trek routes, Chorten Kora and Gom Kora festivals, and the most reliable roads.
Monsoon: heaviest rain June to September, landslide-prone roads, unreliable Yonphula flights and muddy, leech-prone trails. The honest avoid for a first trip.
Peak season: clear skies, harvest fields, and the Trashigang Tshechu usually in late November to early December.
Black-necked cranes winter in the Bumdeling valley from mid November to early March, with cold early mornings.
Cold, clear and quiet: town nights toward freezing, bitter conditions in Merak and on the passes, and empty temples.

the only sensible base for Trashigang
The dzong, market, restaurants and both 3 star properties sit in town or just south on the Kanglung road.

a Samdrup Jongkhar road night, not a base
A small highway settlement south of Trashigang, useful for breaking the Guwahati side drive and for nothing else.
Think twice about

High Brokpa villages hours away by mountain road or trek, with basic facilities. Visit them on their own programme, and sleep in Trashigang for sightseeing.
- Trashiyangtse as a base for Trashigang
About two hours north each way. It has its own sights, Chorten Kora and Bumdeling, but basing there adds daily backtracking to every Trashigang sight.
- Kanglung as a sleeping base
A student town under the Yonphula airstrip with very few tourist beds. Pass through for Sherubtse College and the flight, and sleep in Trashigang.

Is Trashigang safe?
- Car and motorbike accidents are a leading cause of injury in Bhutan, roads worsen in monsoon, and night driving should be avoided.
- Monsoon rain from June to September brings landslides that can cut the lateral highway and the Samdrup Jongkhar road for hours or days.
- Altitude jumps are abrupt: town at about 1,150 m, Yonphula at about 2,560 m and Merak at about 3,400 m. Descend if symptoms worsen.
- Trashigang has a district hospital only: carry evacuation-cover insurance, as serious care can mean evacuation to India or Thailand.
- Do not swim in the Drangme Chhu or Gamri Chhu: fast mountain rivers that rise quickly after rain.
Trashigang travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating Trashigang as a one or two night add-on from Thimphu: days of driving or a weather gamble for a few rushed hours.
- Building an itinerary that depends on the Yonphula flight landing on a specific day, especially against an international connection.
- Expecting a luxury tier, standalone fine dining or a cheap independent tier: none of them exist in Trashigang.
- Assuming a festival date from a single website: official lists are tentative and Gregorian dates move by weeks between years.
Getting around Trashigang: public transport and more
- Budget two to three days by road from Thimphu: 10 to 12 hours to Bumthang, 6 to 7 hours to Mongar, then about 3 hours to Trashigang.
- Drukair lists Paro to Yonphula flights in its 2026 schedules at about 45 minutes on certain weekdays, but they cancel for weather routinely, so hold buffer days and a road fallback.
- The Guwahati route cuts the backtracking: about 3 hours to Samdrup Jongkhar, then about 180 km and roughly 6 hours up to Trashigang.
- There is no self-drive hire in Bhutan: vehicles come with a driver, and a licensed guide is required for dzongs, monuments and trekking.
