Things to do in Bumthang
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bumthang
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring: rhododendron bloom on the treks, warming days, and the Ura Yakchoe usually in April or May.
Kurjey Tshechu and Nimalung Tshechu usually fall in June, just as monsoon cloud and road risk begin.
Monsoon: heavy rain, landslide-prone roads, unreliable domestic flights and leeches on forest trails. The honest avoid for a first trip.
Peak season: clear skies and the great festival run, from Tamshing Phala Choepa to Jakar Tshechu and Jambay Lhakhang Drup.
Cold, clear and quiet: nights well below freezing in Jakar, empty temples, sharp views, and wood stove heating in smaller guesthouses.

Where to stay in Bumthang
Jakar and Choekhor
the only sensible base for Bumthang
Every major temple, the brewery, the restaurants and Bathpalathang Airport sit within about 20 minutes of Jakar.
Tang
one heritage night, not a base
A remote palace stay beside the museum and Mebar Tsho, reached by a rough valley road, best inside a Jakar-based trip.
Think twice about
- Ura as a sleeping base
Beautiful and worth a day trip, but two hours over a 3,600 m pass from Jakar with very limited lodging and no services for a main base.
- Chumey as a sleeping base
Pretty and quiet, but staying here puts every Choekhor temple and Jakar restaurant a drive away with no gain over basing in Jakar.

Is Bumthang safe?
- Jakar is at about 2,600 m: take two easy nights before trekking, and descend if altitude symptoms worsen.
- Car and motorbike accidents are a leading cause of injury in Bhutan, roads worsen in monsoon, and night driving should be avoided.
- Monsoon rain from June to early September brings landslides that can cut the east-west highway for hours or days.
- Jakar has a district hospital only: carry evacuation-cover insurance, as serious care can mean evacuation to India or Thailand.
- Do not swim or climb on the rocks at Mebar Tsho: the river current at the pool has killed visitors.
Bumthang travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating Bumthang as a one night add-on from Thimphu: two punishing road days or a weather gamble for a few rushed hours.
- Building an itinerary that depends on the Bathpalathang flight landing on a specific day, especially against an international connection.
- Assuming a festival date from a single website: official lists are tentative and reputable sources disagree on Gregorian dates.
- Expecting standalone fine dining or a cheap independent tier: neither exists in Bumthang, by Bhutan's design.
Getting around Bumthang: public transport and more
- Budget 10 to 12 hours by road from Thimphu in good conditions, and break the drive in Trongsa or Gangtey if you can.
- Drukair lists Paro to Bathpalathang flights in its 2026 schedules at about 35 minutes, but they cancel for weather routinely, so hold a buffer day and a road fallback.
- There is no self-drive hire in Bhutan: vehicles come with a driver, and a licensed guide is required for dzongs, monuments and trekking.
- Tang and Ura are separate full day trips from Jakar and should never be combined on the same day.
