Things to do in Toledo
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Toledo
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months: late April to May and late September to October, warm, walkable, long evenings.
Worst for most visitors: furnace heat, midday streets empty, some small businesses close in August.
Quiet, cheap and cold alternative: monuments to yourself and short days, poor for excursions.
Christmas: marzipan high season, lights in Zocodover, convent sweets and cold clear days.
What's on
- Corpus Christi Thursday 60 days after Easter, late May / June
Toledo's greatest festival: the Monstrance procession through tapestry hung streets, with private patios opened.
- Semana Santa Holy Week, March/April
Night processions of penitents through silent narrow streets, intimate and severe. Hotels book out.
- Romería de la Virgen del Valle 1 May
Thousands walk to the Ermita del Valle by the Mirador for a picnic pilgrimage.
- Fiestas de Agosto / Virgen del Sagrario mid-August
The city's summer feria with concerts, held in peak heat.
Best things to do in Toledo
Toledo Cathedral
Spanish Gothic cathedral packed with art, from the Sacristy masters to the Transparente and the great Monstrance.
Church of Santo Tomé
Small church holding El Greco's Burial of the Count of Orgaz in the chapel it was painted for.
Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca
Europe's oldest standing synagogue, a forest of white horseshoe arches in Mudejar style.
Synagogue of El Tránsito
Richly decorated synagogue housing the Sephardic Museum, the best account of medieval Jewish Spain.
Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes
Ferdinand and Isabella's votive monastery, with Toledo's most beautiful cloister and freed prisoners' chains outside.
Mirador del Valle
The classic free panorama: the whole walled city in one silhouette across the river bend.
Toledo Underground
Guided route through the Roman baths, Arab wells and medieval cellars hidden below the old town.
Alcázar of Toledo
Fortress palace on the city's highest point, worth it for the building, courtyard and views.
Where to stay in Toledo
Jewish Quarter / Santo Tomé side
best overall micro-base in the Casco
Quieter at night, prettiest lanes, closest to Santo Tomé, both synagogues and San Juan de los Reyes.
Cathedral / Zocodover / Alcázar side
most central, liveliest base
Closest to the Cathedral and main bar streets, with flattest access from the escalators, but noisier at weekends.
Los Cigarrales
views, pools, cars, weddings and longer summer stays
Leafy hill across the Tagus with pools, gardens and parking, but a taxi or drive for every dinner and sight.
Below the walls: Safont / La Vega / Santa Teresa
practicality, trains, parking and budget chains
Level modern streets by the stations and escalators, cheaper and easier, with less historic atmosphere.
Think twice about
- Polígono Industrial Santa María de Benquerencia (El Polígono)
Modern residential industrial district kilometres east, with chain hotels sold as Toledo that strand you far from the Casco.
- Deepest Casco lanes for drivers or anyone with mobility issues
Pedestrianised, restricted and very narrow streets make getting a car and luggage to the door miserable. Park at the edge and walk.
- Talavera de la Reina, Illescas and other province towns listed as Toledo
Aggregators return the whole province. A hotel an hour away is useless as a Toledo base; city postcodes are 45001 to 45008.

Is Toledo safe?
- Toledo is very safe, including at night. Pickpocketing in Cathedral queues and festival crowds is the one real risk.
- July and August heat is a health risk: carry water, plan interiors from 2 to 6pm, and take dizziness seriously.
- Cobbles are slippery when wet, and Barrancas and riverside edges need care after rain.
Toledo travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Photo menu restaurants on Plaza de Zocodover and the main Cathedral drag. Walk two streets away.
- Most sword and damascene shops on the tour route sell mass produced stock. Buy marzipan instead.
- Doing Toledo as a five hour Madrid half day tour is the most common regret in reviews.
Getting around Toledo: public transport and more
- AVANT train from Madrid Atocha takes about 33 minutes; book ahead for festival weekends.
- Walk the compact, steep, cobbled Casco in sturdy grippy shoes and use the free Remonte escalators from Safont.
- Do not drive into the Casco. Park at edge car parks like Safont and walk or taxi the last stretch.
