Best time to visit Albacete
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is the best all round window, mild weather, botanical colour and Rio Mundo at reliable flow.
September brings the Feria from the 7th to the 17th, warm weather and the city at full life.
July and August bake above 35C in the city but are best for swimming at Ruidera and Alcala.
Autumn eases after the Feria, harvest flatters the kitchens and Abycine arrives in late October.
Winter is quiet, cold and cheap, with the February circus festival the reason to come.
March is a shoulder month that can include Semana Santa processions depending on Easter.

families and quiet

Outskirts and ring road
drivers and province day trips
Free parking and fast motorway exits for Alcala, Ruidera and Alcaraz, at the cost of driving in for dinner.
Think twice about
- Feria quarter during the Feria
Superb for partying and terrible for sleeping, with noise around the clock for ten days in September.
- Station perimeter and Imaginalia outskirts as a walk-in base
Built for cars and logistics, thin on restaurants at night and dull to walk through. Fine with a car, poor without one.

Albacete travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Expecting a monumental medieval old town, when Albacete's glory is modernist and commercial.
- Ordering gazpacho manchego expecting cold tomato soup, when it is a hot game stew with flatbread.
- Driving into the old lanes of Chinchilla and upper Alcala instead of parking low and walking up.
- Visiting Ruidera at noon on an August Saturday instead of a weekday morning.
Getting around Albacete: public transport and more
- Walk the flat compact centre and use urban buses for the university, botanical garden and station.
- Albacete-Los Llanos AVE station links the city with Madrid, Valencia, Alicante and Cuenca.
- Rent a car for Alcala, Chinchilla, Alcaraz, Ruidera and Rio Mundo, where rural buses do not build a workable day.
- Plan around siesta closures, lunch from about 13:30 and dinner from about 21:00.
