Things to do in Tirana
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Tirana
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is joint best overall: blossom, full terraces, clearest Dajti views and hotel rates below summer.
Summer is hottest and liveliest: sightsee morning and evening, escape to Dajti at midday, and book ahead.
Autumn is joint best overall: warm, harvest food, crowds gone and the Bovilla, Berat and Kruje sweet spot returns.
Winter is cheapest and quietest, a museums and cafes season. Late November and January are worst for a first visit.

Where to stay in Tirana

City Centre and Skanderbeg Square
sightseeing efficiency and families
Closest to Bunk'Art 2, the House of Leaves, the museums, Pazari i Ri and the airport bus.
Grand Park, Lake and Rruga Elbasanit
quiet, space and longer stays
Greener and more residential with larger hotels, pools and parking, and easy morning runs in the park.
Pazari i Ri and Rruga e Dibres fringe
value with local feel
Newer small hotels and apartments at centre beating prices, with market breakfasts and a short walk to the square.
Think twice about
- Central bus terminal and former train station sprawl, far end of Bulevardi Zogu I
Transport noise, touting and few good hotels, with nothing to walk to at night.
- Far peripheral estates: Kamza, outer Kombinat, outer Lapraka, Fresku and Astir
Not violent, but 30 to 60 minutes by congested bus from everything, with poorly lit streets and few restaurants.
- Tirana to Durres motorway and airport road hotel strip
Isolated and car dependent with nothing within walking distance, unless you have a very early flight.

Is Tirana safe?
- Tirana is a safe capital for visitors with no severe street homelessness problem; use big city awareness, not fear.
- Watch for pickpockets at Pazari i Ri, square events, packed buses and terminals. Keep phones and wallets in front pockets.
- Traffic is the biggest everyday danger. Look both ways even on a green light, especially at night and with children.
- Stay on lit, busy routes late in Blloku and around Grand Park, and take a licensed taxi rather than a dark walk home.
Tirana travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Airport taxi overcharging is the number one trap: quoted fares of 4,000 to 5,000 lek against a fair 2,000 to 2,500 lek.
- Tirana Castle is a dining lane in a wall fragment, not a fortress. Kruje Castle is the real one.
- Square front cafes and restaurants charge double Blloku prices for the same coffee or dish.
- Confirm the per kilo price and the fish's weight before grilling a whole fish.
- Homemade raki can exceed 60 percent alcohol and hosts pour generously. Eat, sip and decline warmly.
Getting around Tirana: public transport and more
- Walk the centre: Blloku, the square, Pazari i Ri, the Castle and the Pyramid form a flat 25 minute walking diamond.
- Airport bus from behind the Palace of Culture costs about 400 lek; city buses cost 40 lek a ride, paid to the conductor.
- Short taxi hops run 300 to 600 lek. Insist on the meter or agree the price first, every time.
- Intercity buses leave from separate regional terminals, so ask your hotel which terminal serves your day trip.
