Is Berat safe?
- Berat is exceptionally safe for visitors, with crime against tourists near non existent per local sources.
- Main annoyances are taxi fares, summer heat, strong raki and slippery cobbles in rain.
- Gorica lanes are village dark late at night, a phone torch for the cobbles is the only precaution suggested.
- Rural roads to the canyon, Tomorr and Apollonia are winding and occasionally rough, use tours or drivers.
Berat travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The one night or half day Berat: arriving at noon and leaving before the xhiro misses the town's best hours.
- Midday castle climbs in July and August are shadeless on polished cobbles, go at dawn or dusk.
- Riverfront view restaurants charge a modest panorama premium, fine once, poor value nightly.
- Never self drive the winery road, pours are generous and homemade raki is strong.
- Ethnographic Museum listings flip between open and closed, verify on the day and do not prepay it as guaranteed.
Getting around Berat: public transport and more
- Walk the castle, Mangalem, Republika and Gorica circuit, it is the whole visitor city.
- No airport or railway: Tirana airport is 2 to 2.5 hours by road and buses from Tirana run about every 30 minutes.
- Hire a driver for winery days and agree taxi fares before moving, or insist on the meter.
- Cash is still king in smaller places: carry lek for buses, cafes, museums and markets.
