Things to do in Tinian
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Tinian
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season: lowest rain, trade winds, calmest seas, best diving and North Field walking.
Wet season builds, humidity peaks, Liberation Day on 4 July, keep flights flexible.
Wettest months and peak typhoon season. Fixed date trips are a gamble, flights and boats cancel first.
Shoulder: rain eases late in the month, sea stays warm, crowds negligible.
What's on
- Tinian Hot Pepper Festival (Pika Fest) Presidents Day weekend, mid February
Fiesta Grounds, San Jose: donni sali pepper food stalls, estafao pika contest, pepper eating contest and the 5K Pika Run.
- Liberation Day 4 July
Marianas wide holiday marking the 1945 closure of the civilian internment camps, with community events on Tinian.
- Tinian Beef, Beer & Bands Festival August, dates vary by year
Locals festival in the MVA calendar. Worth catching if already on island, not a reason to book into typhoon season.
Best things to do in Tinian
Atomic Bomb Pits
Two marked loading pits where the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs were loaded in August 1945. Quiet, free, self guided.
North Field
The vast 1945 B-29 airfield both atomic missions flew from, now being rebuilt by the US Air Force, so access varies.
Ushi Point
Northern tip of North Field with Japanese, US and Korean memorials and the old Japanese air operations building.
House of Taga
Largest known latte house in the Marianas: one 15 foot pillar still stands of twelve, in a shaded village clearing.
Tinian Shrine
Small Japanese era Shinto shrine with two torii gates above San Jose, also called Hinode Shrine or NKK Shrine.
Suicide Cliff
South east cliff and Japanese memorials where soldiers and civilians died at the end of the 1944 battle. Unguarded edge.
San Jose Catholic Church
Centre of Tinian's only village: church and old bell tower beside the Fiesta Grounds, harbour and House of Taga walk.
Where to stay in Tinian
San Jose Village
only practical base, all stays
Every hotel, cafe and the harbour sit in or beside the village, minutes from Kammer Beach and the House of Taga.
Think twice about
- Northern Tinian and the North Field works area
Military lease land and an active Air Force rebuild: closures, construction traffic and UXO awareness. Stay on open, signed historic routes only.
- The closed Tinian Dynasty resort site
Closed since 2015 and private property above Taga Beach. A landmark to look at, not a hotel, a venue or a shortcut.

- UXO may remain from 1944 to 1945. Never touch or souvenir metal objects or relics, on land or underwater.
- No lifeguards anywhere. Swim at the San Jose beaches only, never on the exposed east coast or at the Blowhole.
Tinian travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Counting on the Dynasty, a casino, a ferry timetable or a Cape Air flight: all are gone.
- Building a same evening onward connection out of Saipan after a last Tinian flight.

- You need a rental car, booked with your flight. No public transport, no taxi rank, fuel only in San Jose.
