Things to do in Saipan
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Saipan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Drier, less humid season with the clearest lagoon and Grotto light, and the best months to book first.
Taste of the Marianas runs on Saturday nights through May Tourism Month in Garapan, free entry.
Wet season builds, but Liberation Day on 4 July brings the Beach Road parade, festival grounds and fireworks.
Peak typhoon season on top of the wet season, worst months for a fixed date trip, travel only fully flexible.
Shoulder month, rain eases and prices soften but early month weather can still be unsettled.

Best things to do in Saipan
American Memorial Park
Start here for the museum and memorial that make every other Saipan battle site legible, inside a living town park.
Managaha Island
A tiny lagoon islet of white sand and sheltered reef, and the easiest high reward snorkelling on a Saipan trip.
Micro Beach
Garapan's calm town beach and the island's default sunset spot, in front of the Micro Beach hotel row.
Banzai Cliff
A northern clifftop memorial where soldiers and civilians died in 1944, to be visited as remembrance first and view second.
Suicide Cliff
The lookout above the northern plain from which the same 1944 tragedy is surveyed, best in a morning memorial loop.
Bird Island
A roadside lookout facing a protected seabird islet, a 20 minute sunrise stop on the way to the Grotto.
Last Command Post
A shell scarred cave bunker fronted by tanks and artillery, the most physical relic of the 1944 battle.
Korean Peace Memorial
The memorial by the Last Command Post honouring Korean dead of 1944, and the stop that widens the battle story most.
Where to stay in Saipan
Garapan
first trip, all round base
Walk to restaurants, the Street Market, American Memorial Park, tour pickups and the Micro Beach sunset.
San Roque and Achugao
resort quiet, repeat visitors
Northern lagoon resorts with better grounds and worse walkability, a short drive rather than a walk to dinner.
Chalan Kanoa and Susupe
families, waterparks, airport nights
Southern lagoon resorts five minutes from the airport, best enjoyed inside the resort with a car after dark.
Think twice about
- Shuttered hotel blocks of Susupe and empty Beach Road stretches in Garapan
Deserted, unlit frontage after dark between live businesses. Stay at an operating resort there if you like it, but drive at night and do not pick an unstaffed unit expecting a lively walk home.
- Kagman and east coast and far north as a base without a car
Residential and scenic with almost no visitor lodging or evening food, and marooned after dark without your own transport.

A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Managaha Island: a few days ahead
- LaoLao Bay Golf & Resort: a few days ahead
- Kingfisher Golf Links: a few days ahead
- Coral Ocean Resort: a few days ahead
- The Grotto: a few days ahead
- Tinian: weeks ahead
- Garapan: a few days ahead
- Kensington Hotel Saipan: weeks ahead
- Book flights early and flexibly, inter island and international capacity is thin and was still rebuilding in 2026.
- Book the Grotto guided tour, any Tinian flight and car, Kensington and Crowne Plaza in festival weeks, and a rental car for holidays.
- Book hotels cancellable and reconfirm operating status, restaurant openings and waterpark facilities within a week of arrival.
Is Saipan safe?
- Never swim the Forbidden Island channel or enter the Grotto unguided, currents and sharp coral have killed visitors.
- Do the northern memorial loop and Mount Tapochau in the morning with water and a hat, midday heat is punishing.
- At night stay in lit, occupied areas and drive on unlit Beach Road sections rather than walking deserted frontage.
- In typhoon season take Commonwealth advisories seriously and expect flights and boats to cancel for days.
Saipan travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Aggregator pages still selling closed or partly closed hotels, including stale Grandvrio Resort Saipan inventory.
- Beach tout water sports pricing in Garapan versus hotel desk pricing for the same lagoon.
- Managaha on island rental and food prices, which assume a captive day tripper.
- Any Tinian plan built on an assumed ferry, confirm the flight pattern instead.
Getting around Saipan: public transport and more
- Rent a car for the whole stay, there is no meaningful visitor public transit and sights sit at both tips of a 12 mile island.
- Garapan, American Memorial Park and Micro Beach are walkable from Garapan hotels, almost nothing else is.
- Do not use a rental moped as main transport, local advice warns they are underpowered on hills and risky at night.
- Download offline maps for the east coast and north, where signal and lighting are patchy.
