Is Daocheng Yading safe?
- Altitude first: worsening headache, vomiting, breathlessness at rest or confusion mean descend to Riwa or lower at once and get medical help.
- Weather turns fast above 4,500 m in every season. Carry layers, waterproofs, sun protection and gloves on the long route even in July.
- Winter brings ice and snow closures on the passes and park roads, and the long route is often closed or restricted.
- Local laws can be enforced in ways visitors do not expect, and exit bans can be applied; carry your passport and expect ID checks.
Daocheng Yading travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Oxygen costs much more inside the park. Buy it in Riwa or Daocheng town before you need it.
- Tours promising Milk Lake on your arrival day from a flight are selling the highest risk version of this trip.
- Do not plan the long route around a horse. Current sources disagree, rides are partial and limited, and the steep final section is on foot.
- Herbal altitude products are not a substitute for acclimatisation, sleeping low and descending when ill.
Getting around Daocheng Yading: public transport and more
- Sleep first in Riwa at about 2,900 m, minutes from the park gate, not in Yading Village or Daocheng town.
- Flying into Daocheng Yading Airport at 4,411 m is the riskiest arrival. The Kangding, Xinduqiao and Litang road gains height in stages over two days.
- Inside the park: mandatory sightseeing bus to Zhaguanbeng, walk to Chonggu, battery cart CNY 50 one way or CNY 80 return to Luorong, then walk.
- Park entry listings give CNY 146 plus CNY 120 bus in peak season, CNY 266 total. Enter early for the long route and check times the day before.
