Things to do in Skopje
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Skopje
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is a best season: mild to warm, Matka and Vodno green, terraces open, May can be wettest.
Hot at 32 to 35C and above, so sightsee morning and evening and expect crowded Matka weekends.
Autumn is a best season and cultural peak: September harvest, October Jazz Festival.
Coldest and cheapest, with cosy kafanas and spas, but December to January air pollution is a caveat.

Where to stay in Skopje
Centar / Macedonia Square
first trip, all-round base
Flat and fully walkable, with every main sight within 20 minutes and the widest hotel choice.
Debar Maalo / Bunjakovec
food, drink and evenings
Leafy streets with Bohemian Street, kafana density and City Park at its edge, near the square.
Old Bazaar / Cair
atmosphere and history
Wake inside the Ottoman quarter, but the Bazaar quiets early and alcohol is scarce there.
Karposh / City Park edge and Vodno foothills
families and longer stays
Residential and green by City Park, trading a short taxi ride for sleep quality and space.
Think twice about
- Transport Centre / Prolet strip
Rundown and poorly lit around the station, a pickpocket and hassle hotspot and a depressing base.
- Suto Orizari and outer Cair / Topansko Pole edges
No real visitor accommodation and poor infrastructure and lighting, so not a practical base.
- Aerodrom / Kisela Voda
Not unsafe, but soulless planned suburbs a bus or taxi ride from everything.
- Near Skopje International Airport
The airport is about 23 km out and there is no airport hotel cluster worth a night of your trip.

- Tourist risk is petty crime: pickpockets in Macedonia Square, along the Vardar, at Matka and on buses.
- Keep phones and wallets secure in crowds and never leave bags visible in a hire car.
- Emergency and practical care: use licensed taxis and walk the lit centre freely in the evening.
- Check the air quality forecast in December and January, when pollution can be severe.
Skopje travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Treating the Skopje 2014 statues as a full day of sightseeing on their own.
- The pirate ship novelty bars on the Vardar, priced and serviced for tourists.
- Unlicensed or meter off taxis at the airport and station overcharging arrivals.
- Rushing Ohrid as a day trip and getting only about three hours there.
Getting around Skopje: public transport and more
- Walk Centar, the Bazaar and Debar Maalo, it is a walking city.
- Bus 60 goes to Matka, city buses reach Mid Vodno, and cards work with cash as backup.
- Use licensed taxis with the meter running, above all at the airport and station.
- Money is the denar at about 61 to 62 per euro, and Bazaar shops and bakeries need cash.
