Things to do in Ohrid
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ohrid
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best overall: warm enough to swim, long days, thinner crowds, lower prices and everything open.
Peak: hottest, warmest lake, festival season, and the town at its fullest and priciest.
Shoulder: beautiful light and best hiking, but lake cold for most swimmers and some boats not running.
Worst for most: cold, many businesses closed or reduced, limited flights and boats, except carnival and Epiphany weekends.

Flat and easy near restaurants and boats, with lake view balconies, parking and pushchair friendly streets.

Think twice about
- High Varosh with mobility issues or heavy luggage
Steep, slippery cobbles are a fall risk, especially in winter ice or after rain. Base at the flat Old Town edge instead.
- Main shore road (Kej / Naum Ohridski) for light sleepers
Promenade life runs to midnight and beyond in peak season. It is noise, not danger.
- Unlit rural roads around Galicica and Prespa at night
Winding, narrow roads with animals possible. Drive them in daylight.

Is Ohrid safe?
- The lake is deep and cold below the surface and afternoon winds rise fast. Swim at recognised beaches and supervise children.
- In Galicica carry water, tell someone your route and expect patchy signal.
- At Golem Grad wear closed shoes, watch where you step and leave snakes alone.
- Watch bags at crowded beaches and festival events and do not leave valuables visible in rental cars at trailheads.
Ohrid travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Ohrid pearls are coated beads, not natural pearls. Buy from established Talevi and Filevi workshops at craft prices, not gem prices.
- Taxi overcharging and unmetered fixed prices from the harbour and bus station. Agree or meter every time.
- Cheapest harbour boat touting may mean minimal time at St Naum and no Bay of Bones stop. Check inclusions and time first.
- Menus boasting cheap wild Ohrid trout: the endemic trout is protected and reputable places serve farmed fish and say so.
- Exchange booths near the harbour with notably good rates. Use banks or ATMs and avoid dynamic currency conversion.
Getting around Ohrid: public transport and more
- Walk the compact Old Town and flat promenade. Driving into Varosh is a mistake, with narrow lanes and nowhere to park.
- Local buses run south to St Naum and the beaches but are infrequent. Check the timetable and the last bus back.
- Boat taxis and cruises cover St Naum and Trpejca in season. A rental car unlocks Galicica, Prespa, Vevcani and Golem Grad.
- Most visitors fly to Skopje and bus or drive about 3 to 3.5 hours. Ohrid airport has limited seasonal services.
- Use metered taxis or agree a price before moving, and have your hotel call a known driver for longer trips.
- Pay in Macedonian denar. Cash is essential for church entries, rowboats, sunbeds, bakeries, markets and taxis.
