Things to do in Shamakhi
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Shamakhi
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Coldest months, nights below freezing, short days and snow possible at Pirqulu, with slow mountain roads in ice.
Spring warming and green hills, uncrowded sights, with rain possible and muddy tracks at Pirqulu and Gulistan.
Greenest months and best walking weather; May is the wettest month, June turns warm, dry and long-dayed.
Warm, dry and clearest skies, the observatory peak season, with midday tour crowds at the mosque and winery.
Best single month for most travellers: warm days, grape harvest at Meysari and the Grape and Wine Festival.
Autumn colour in the Pirqulu forests, cooler and wetter, with shorter days and quieter sights.
Late autumn into winter, cold nights, cloudier skies and a lean season for resorts and the observatory.
What's on
- Grape and Wine Festival Usually September
Producer pavilions, tastings and concerts at the Shirvan Wines complex in Meysari village.
- Grape harvest at Meysari September into early autumn
The working harvest in the Meysari vineyards, the backdrop to the festival and to harvest season winery visits.
Best things to do in Shamakhi
Juma Mosque
Among the earliest mosques in the Caucasus on its site, rebuilt after earthquakes and still the working heart of the town.
Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum
Domed tombs of the Shamakhi khans in a hillside graveyard, atmospheric and half ruined, with views over the town.
Gulistan Fortress
Ruined last refuge of the Shirvan dynasty above the royal tombs, worth the rough climb for walls and a viewpoint.
Meysari Winery
Azerbaijan's first EU certified organic winery, pouring Madrasa and Bayan Shira on vineyard tours and tastings.
Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory
The largest observatory in the Caucasus at Pirqulu, with a small museum and arranged visits when research allows.
Alpaca Azerbaijan
A pasture farm near the vineyards where visitors feed alpacas for about an hour, best paired with the winery.
Shamakhi Local History Museum
A small museum that gives the scattered Shirvan monuments, poets and earthquake story a single timeline.
Mirza Alakbar Sabir House Museum
The house museum of Shamakhi's satirical poet Sabir, a small literary stop close to the Juma Mosque.
Where to stay in Shamakhi
Shamakhi town centre
walkable sightseeing base
Walk to the Juma Mosque, the museums and Yeddi Gumbaz, with the town's practical mid-range and budget beds.
Pirqulu
observatory, safari park and cool highland air
The highland settlement 22 km north of town, by the observatory, the reserve and the safari park.
Countryside resorts outside town
resort stays, pools and events
Village resorts at Sharadil and on the lake at Saghiyan, strong on facilities and needing a car for sights.
Think twice about
- Baku to Shamakhi highway strip outside town
Roadside stops with nothing to walk to at night and a car needed for every meal and sight. Sleep in town, Pirqulu or a resort instead.
Best restaurants in Shamakhi
Abqora Restaurant & Wine Club
The winery restaurant by the lake at Meysari, Azerbaijani dishes with estate organic wines and masterclasses.

A popular barbecue roadhouse on the Pirqulu road in Melham village, good for a family lunch on the drive.

Outdoor things to do in Shamakhi
Diri Baba Mausoleum
A 1402 mausoleum built into a cliff on the Baku to Shamakhi road, a short legendary stop on the drive, not in town.
Pirqulu State Reserve
Highland oak and beech forest around Pirqulu with springs and picnic spots, walking country rather than a built park.
Shamakhi Safari Park
A fenced mountain reserve toured by vehicle for red deer, fallow deer and mouflon, a deer park rather than a safari.
Demirchi Village
A high blacksmiths' village on the Lahij road, still working at forges and looms rather than staged for visitors.
Lahij
A coppersmiths' village of cobbled streets in the next district, the strongest craft excursion onward from Shamakhi.

Is Shamakhi safe?
- The Baku to Shamakhi to Ismayilli road and the Pirqulu road are mountain roads; in winter snow and ice, drive in daylight and allow far longer.
- Dress modestly for the Juma Mosque and expect prayer times to govern access.
- Watch for livestock on rural lanes and unlit roads outside town after dark.
Shamakhi travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- One day Baku tours that bundle Shamakhi, Ismayilli, Qabala and Sheki are windscreen tours, not visits.
- The observatory does not open its big telescope on demand, and Baku tour prices for the alpaca farm far exceed arriving independently.
- A similarly named lowland national park south of Baku by the Caspian is not a Shamakhi excursion, despite the shared Shirvan name.
Getting around Shamakhi: public transport and more
- Shamakhi is about 120 km and roughly 2 hours by road from Baku, by car, taxi or bus from Baku bus terminal toward Ismayilli and Qabala.
- In town the mosque, museums and Yeddi Gumbaz are walkable; Meysari, Pirqulu, the safari park and the resorts need a taxi or driver.
- Agree the taxi price and the return trip before setting off, and drive the Pirqulu and Lahij mountain roads in daylight.
