Best time to visit Nakhchivan
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is a prime window: warming weather, green hills at Batabat, and Novruz in March with peak flight demand.
Hot and very dry in the city, often 30 to 35 degrees or more; sightsee early and use Batabat for cooler air.
Autumn is the other prime window, clear and mild early on, with Ordubad orchard fruit and easy Alinja conditions.
Cold with below freezing nights and possible snow; city sights and salt caves work, mountain excursions are constrained.

- Saat Meydani Nakhchivan: a few days ahead
- Book Baku to Nakhchivan flights well ahead around Novruz and Ramadan holidays, when AZAL itself warns demand spikes.
- Book Gamigaya as a planned 4x4 day with a local driver, not as a walk up.
- Confirm your hotel has filed your State Migration Service registration if your Azerbaijan stay exceeds 15 days.
Is Nakhchivan safe?
- Stay away from border lines, military positions and unmarked ground off roads in the border districts.
- Medical facilities outside Baku are very limited, so carry evacuation cover and a basic first aid kit.
- Never photograph military installations or border infrastructure, and stay on roads in border districts.
Nakhchivan travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not plan a land route from Baku: no passenger route across Armenia exists, and the proposed TRIPP corridor is not built.
- Do not assume a Turkey or Iran border crossing listed as open will admit a foreign tourist on the day.
- Do not start Alinja at midday in summer: the stair is fully exposed and sources stress a morning climb.
Getting around Nakhchivan: public transport and more
- Fly Baku to Nakhchivan City with AZAL, the only carrier, about 1 hour 10 minutes, several flights daily and more at holidays.
- Walk the centre between the mausoleums, Khan Palace and museums; hire taxis or a private driver for everything else.
- Agree taxi price, waiting time and the return leg before setting off for Batabat, Ordubad or Gamigaya.
