Things to do in Samal Island
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Samal Island
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Coolest and among the driest months, west coast calm and clear Apo views, east coast roughest in the northeast monsoon.
Hot local summer, calmest and clearest sea, fullest island hopping, with the Visit Samal summer programme and Holy Week effects.
Wetter months with choppier exposed crossings. August brings Kadayawan in Davao, peak durian and Samal's Pangapog thanksgiving.
Shoulder season: fruit into October, Hagimit Falls at full flow, frequent rain and a quieter, cheaper island.
What's on
- Kadayawan Festival through August, main events on the second and third weekends

- Pangapog Festival first week of August
The Sama people's thanksgiving for land and sea harvests on Samal, also styled Madayaw Hugyaw Samal. Confirm dates with the city tourism office.
- Summer Saya sa Isla March to May, highlights in May

Think twice about
- Sulu Archipelago and the southern Sulu Sea
Kidnapping, terrorism and unrest risk. Not part of any Samal trip.
- Marawi City
Terrorism and unrest risk. Not part of any Samal trip.
- Western and central Mindanao
Do not route a Samal trip through here: kidnapping and unrest risk in the region.
- Remainder of Mindanao outside the Davao gateway routes
Do not extend a Samal trip into mainland Mindanao beyond the Davao gateway.

Is Samal Island safe?
- The 2015 marina kidnapping on Samal's north coast is why resort boats, resort transfers and moving in daylight are the way to get around.
- Use resort boats and transfers, move by daylight on island roads, and choose habal-habal drivers who offer a helmet.
- Emergency care on Samal is basic and serious cases transfer to Davao City, so insurance that covers you here is not optional.
Samal Island travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Resort day use pricing stacks entry, environmental fee, cottage and corkage. Confirm the full day cost before the boat, not at the gate.
- Samal beaches are good local beaches, not world class ones, and packaged tours bundling the sights cost multiples of the gate and ferry prices.
- The Samal to Davao bridge is still under construction at about 62 percent on mid 2026 official figures. Plan on the ferry for 2026 and 2027.
Getting around Samal Island: public transport and more
- Cross by the Mae Wess ferry from Sasa Wharf Km 11 to Kinawitnon in Babak, about 10 to 15 minutes, running around the clock, or by your resort's own boat.
- On the island use habal-habal motorcycles, bao-bao three wheelers and hired vans agreed at the wharf. Babak to Kaputian takes about an hour.
- Island City Express buses ride the barge from Davao to Penaplata, the cheapest route to the town centre, Hagimit Falls and Puting Bato.
- Expect a small environmental user fee, about PHP 40 to 50, at wharves and sites on top of fares and entry fees.
