- In the dry season, book flights, accommodation, dive slots and the Blue Lagoon and Reef Island days before you arrive.

Is Rangiroa safe?
- Never swim or snorkel a pass independently; go only with an operator on the right tide, as the currents are powerful.
- The nearest decompression chamber is at the hospital in Papeete, about an hour by air when evacuation can run, so dive conservatively and carry evacuation insurance.
- Use reef shoes and clean coral cuts promptly, and protect against fierce sun and glare reflected off the lagoon.
Rangiroa travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The combo day compressing the Blue Lagoon and Reef Island into one outing means about three hours of navigation and a lesser version of both.
- Buying pearls without the grading explanation, away from a farm or reputable shop, is the classic Rangiroa overspend.
- A pink sand listing that mentions no boat is probably about Tikehau, a different atoll.
Getting around Rangiroa: public transport and more
- Fly Air Tahiti or Air Moana from Papeete in about an hour and build the trip around the flight pattern, not the other way round.
- There is no meaningful public transport: bicycles from your pension or hotel are the transport system on the single flat road.
- Tiputa village sits across Tiputa Pass and is reached by boat only; there is no bridge or road connection.
- Taxis are scarce and expensive for short hops, so agree the fare before you ride.
