Is Raiatea safe?
- Pass diving is current diving for qualified divers only, and the coral garden drift should not be attempted unguided or by weak swimmers.
- Cyclone season runs November to April, so keep plans flexible and follow official weather advice.
- Uturoa has the Leeward Islands hospital, and serious cases are still evacuated to Papeete, so medical evacuation insurance is essential.
Raiatea travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Set a pearl budget before any farm boutique, and ask about grading, origin and tax first.
- Paying a 20,000 XPF circle island taxi instead of renting a car over several days.
- Expecting a walk out beach on the main island, when the white sand is on the motu, by boat.
Getting around Raiatea: public transport and more
- Rent a car ahead in dry season and race weeks, roughly 8,000 to 12,000 XPF a day, and read addresses in PK points from Uturoa.
- Public buses are thin and weekday weighted, taxis are few, and Tahaa shuttle boats run weekday schedules, thin on Sundays.
