Best time to visit Pamir Highway
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Full season: passes reliably open, Wakhan gardens producing, homestays and group departures running.
Many experienced travellers' favourite month: stable weather, harvest food, thinner crowds, colder nights, first pass snow possible late.
Shoulder gambles: May brings landslides and high rivers, October brings early snow risk on the high section. Take spare days.
Winter is expedition-grade: far below minus 20 on the plateau, passes close in storms and most stays shut. our trip does not exist.

- Get the GBAO permit with the e-visa on evisa.tj, or separately via OVIR in Dushanbe if entering visa-free, and allow a buffer day.
- Allow at least two weeks for e-visa processing, and permits can be suspended at short notice.
- Book the vehicle and driver weeks ahead for July and August, and print five to ten copies of visa, permit and passport for checkpoints.
- Arrange homestays through PECTA, your driver or an operator, a day or more ahead where signal allows.
Is Pamir Highway safe?
- Stay alert near the Afghan border and in the GBAO: cross-border violence, civil unrest and permit suspensions can change access.
- Civil unrest is a risk in the GBAO, there have been cross-border attacks on the Afghan frontier, and there are minefields off-road in border areas.
- There is no helicopter rescue in the Pamirs and medical care outside Dushanbe is basic. Evacuation is by your own vehicle, down.
- Avoid alcohol on the high section, ascend sleeping altitude gradually, and talk to your doctor about altitude medicine before the trip.
Pamir Highway travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not build the trip around the Ishkashim Saturday market, which is suspended for long periods and changes without notice.
- Do not linger at Ak-Baital Pass at 4,655 m for photos if anyone has a worsening headache, nausea or confusion. Descend.
- Do not expect luxury, card payments or ATMs east of Khorog. Carry somoni plus clean post-2013 US dollar notes.
- Do not photograph checkpoints, military sites or border installations, and do not bring a drone without special permission.
Getting around Pamir Highway: public transport and more
- Hire a shared 4x4 with driver for the full Dushanbe to Osh run, usually a Land Cruiser, and agree total, currency and inclusions before moving.
- Shared taxis run the main legs for the thrifty budget but skip the Wakhan detours, fortresses and lake walks that make the trip.
- Dushanbe to Osh via the Wakhan is the gentler altitude direction, sleeping at about 1,200, 2,100, then 2,600 to 3,000 m before the plateau.
- Murghab district keeps time one hour ahead of the rest of Tajikistan, so confirm departure times there twice.
