Things to do in Khorog
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Khorog
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Severe winter: snow on the high passes, short days, road closures possible, and heating matters more than sights.
Spring thaw with mud and landslide risk on the Dushanbe road; workable for the Wakhan, risky for a tight highway schedule.
The season: passes normally open, drivers and homestays in full operation, and the best trekking and highway conditions.
Clear, cold and quiet shoulder month, with first snow on high passes later in October and services shrinking.

What to book ahead
- Lake Karakul: weeks ahead
- Khorog Serena Inn: weeks ahead
- Add the GBAO permit when you apply for the Tajik e-visa, and print several paper copies for checkpoints.
- Book Khorog Serena Inn and a good highway driver ahead in June to September; the Serena has only a handful of rooms.
- Arrange separate permission well ahead for Lake Sarez or the Zorkul reserve; a GBAO permit does not cover them.
Is Khorog safe?
- Altitude is the main medical risk: rest in Khorog, ascend slowly, and descend at once if symptoms worsen; Murghab sleeps at about 3,600 metres.
- Never walk off road near the Afghan border because of marked and unmarked minefields, and do not photograph checkpoints or soldiers.
- Carry high altitude medical evacuation insurance; care in Khorog is basic and evacuation is a long road or an uncertain flight.
- Tajik borders can close without notice and GBAO permits can be suspended at short notice; allow for a permit suspension or road closure ending a trip without warning.
Khorog travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Planning around the Ishkashim Saturday cross border market: it is closed in current sources, so do not build a Wakhan day around it.
- Counting on a Dushanbe to Khorog flight: no dependable scheduled service could be verified, so keep a road plan behind any flight offer.
- Assuming a luxury tier exists in Khorog: the best hotel and restaurant in town are good mid range, and priced like it.
Getting around Khorog: public transport and more
- Khorog is walkable in the centre; shared taxis cover longer hops such as Pamir Lodge and the botanical garden for a few somoni.
- All excursions need a hired 4x4 with a driver arranged through a guesthouse or operator; shared taxis go point to point without sightseeing stops.
- The Dushanbe road is roughly 600 km and 14 to 16 hours typically; do not schedule a same day onward connection.
