Where to stay in Ouidah
Ouidah centre
sightseeing on foot
Walk to the museum, the basilica, the python temple and the sacred forest, with town restaurants and zemidjans at hand.
Ouidah Plage
pool, sea air and the end of the slave route
Beach hotels near the Door of No Return, quieter at night, but every town trip needs a car or a zemidjan on unlit roads.
Think twice about
- Ouidah beach in the water
Strong surf, rip currents and frequent drownings on this coast. Walk the beach and swim in a hotel pool instead.
- Beach strip roads on foot after dark
The roads to the Ouidah Plage hotels are sandy and unlit at night. Use a car or a zemidjan arranged by your hotel.

Is Ouidah safe?
- Petty crime, road accidents and medical limits are the realistic day to day risks in the south, and terrorism can target places frequented by foreigners anywhere.
- Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry, malaria risk is high all year on the coast, and bottled or treated water is the safe default.
- Do not swim in the sea at Ouidah or in Lake Aheme, avoid intercity roads after dark, and carry insurance covering medical evacuation.
Ouidah travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Guides who approach you at the beach, and unclear extras at shrines: agree the price, duration and what entry and photo payments include first.
- Treating the slave route as a photo walk: keep photography restrained at memorials and always ask at shrines and ceremonies.
- Assuming cards work: outside the biggest hotels, Ouidah runs on cash in smaller notes.
Getting around Ouidah: public transport and more
- Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport is roughly 40 km east and the drive takes about an hour, so arrange the transfer through your hotel.
- Walk the centre early or late in the day, and use zemidjans for the rest, agreeing the fare before you get on every time.
- For Ganvié, Grand-Popo and Possotomé, hire a car with a driver through your hotel and agree the day price, fuel and boats in advance.
