Things to do in Grand-Popo
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Grand-Popo
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
The long dry season and best window, with turtle nesting peaks in November, December and January and Vodun day on 10 January.
The main rainy season in the south, with March and April the hottest months before the rains, and Nonvitcha in this window in some years.
The short dry break in the south, and the start of sea turtle nesting on Grand-Popo beaches from August.
The second, shorter rainy season, humid with muddy village tracks, building towards the November nesting peak.
What's on
- Nonvitcha Pentecost weekend, May or June, variable (8 June in 2025)
The Xwla and Xweda homecoming festival in Grand-Popo, first celebrated in 1923, filling the town for several days around Pentecost Sunday.
- Vodun Day 10 January
Benin's national Vodun holiday, celebrated most intensely in nearby Ouidah, with ceremonies also held locally in Grand-Popo.
Best things to do in Grand-Popo
La Bouche du Roi
Where the Mono River and lagoon meet the Atlantic through shifting sandbanks, calm river on one side and heavy surf on the other.
Villa Karo
The Finnish-African cultural centre in town, with exhibitions, concerts, film nights, a library and artist residencies since 2000.
Comptoirs Coloniaux de Gbecon
Ruined colonial trading posts in a quiet ghost settlement, best read with a local guide who can explain what each ruin was.
Grand Popo Beach
Kilometres of palm lined sand for dawn walks and sunsets, with dangerous rip currents that make it a beach to look at, not swim in.
Grand-Popo Market
The working morning market by the Mono River, with the day's fish, cloth and produce, best for seeing everyday Xwla town life.
Heve
A lagoon side village where a Zangbeto Vodun performance can be arranged through a local guide, with drumming and song.
Where to stay in Grand-Popo
Grand-Popo beachfront
beach hotels, pools and sunset walks
The strip of beach hotels east and west of town, including the Awale Plage at Ewe Condji and the Millenium, is where most visitors sleep.
Grand-Popo town
budget bases, Villa Karo and the market
Staying in town puts you by Villa Karo, the market and the restaurants, a short walk or moto ride from the beach hotels.
Think twice about
- Isolated beach and lagoon stretches after dark
Unlit, empty and far from help at night. Walk them at dawn and in the day, and return to lit, populated areas after dark.
- Benin's northern border regions
Crime, terrorism and kidnapping risks make the borders with Burkina Faso, Niger and northern Nigeria, including Pendjari and W National Parks, unsafe to visit. They are far from Grand-Popo.
Best restaurants in Grand-Popo
Boca del Rio
Grand-Popo's splurge table, a garden seafood restaurant known for prawns and grilled fish, and the best food travellers find in town.
Restaurant Chez Chef Paterne
A small restaurant cooking Italian and French dishes alongside local food, for a night when the group wants pasta, not grilled fish.
Saveurs d'Afrique
A mid-range Grand-Popo restaurant blending African and European cooking, a sensible alternative to the hotel restaurants in town.
Farafina
A small, cheap African restaurant and bar for the grilled fish of the day, with mixed feedback, so agree prices first.
Outdoor things to do in Grand-Popo
Mono River
A pirogue trip past mangroves, cast net fishermen and salt making lagoon villages, out to the river mouth at La Bouche du Roi.
Nature Tropicale ONG
In nesting season, ecoguards patrol Grand-Popo beaches at night and visitors may join a patrol or hatchling release by arrangement.
Ouidah
The heritage day trip east, Benin's Vodun capital and main historic slave port, about 44 km from Grand-Popo by road.
Lake Aheme
Benin's second largest lake, linked to the Grand-Popo lagoon, with fishing villages, acadja fisheries and strong birdlife.
Sources Chaudes de Possotome
The artesian hot spring wells at Possotome on Lake Aheme, the gentle inland pairing to a lake shore visit from Grand-Popo.
Best hotels in Grand-Popo
Millenium Popo Beach Hotel
The most upmarket hotel actually in Grand-Popo, beachfront with a pool and garden, but good regional level rather than true luxury.

The longstanding in town auberge with a pool, garden and restaurant at below average prices, comfortable if a little tired in places.
Auberge Coco Beach Grand Popo

Is Grand-Popo safe?
- Do not swim in the ocean: rip currents including flash rips are documented on Grand Popo beach and there are no lifeguards. Swim in hotel pools.
- Do not walk isolated beach or lagoon stretches after dark, and keep valuables out of sight at the market.
- Take malaria precautions and a yellow fever certificate, and carry insurance with medical evacuation: major hospital care is in Cotonou.
Grand-Popo travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not rely on cards or a cash machine in town: carry XOF cash in small notes from Cotonou, because change is scarce.
- Online taxi fare quotes for Ouidah to Grand-Popo can be implausibly high: use a hotel arranged driver with an agreed return price.
- Casa del Papa is in Ouidah, not Grand-Popo, despite appearing in Grand-Popo hotel searches.
Getting around Grand-Popo: public transport and more
- Grand-Popo is about 90 km west of Cotonou, roughly two hours by road from Cotonou airport towards the Togo border at Hillacondji.
- Walk in town, use moto taxis for longer hops, and arrange pirogues and drivers to Ouidah and Lake Aheme through your hotel.
- Agree every boat, guide and driver price, and what it includes, before you set off.
