Things to do in Oran
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Oran
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, warm and sightseeable all day, sea swimmable by late spring and still warm in early autumn.
Hot and dry high season, beaches and the corniche full of families and diaspora visitors, sightsee early and live in the evening.
Mild, wetter in spells and quietest, museums and the old quarter at their most local, beaches for walking only.
Ramadan falls roughly here in 2026 and 2027 and moves earlier each year, closing most restaurants in daylight and moving dinner late.
What's on
- Oran International Arabic Film Festival autumn, dates vary by year (November in the 2025 edition)

Best things to do in Oran
Fort Santa Cruz
The Spanish fort of 1577 to 1604 above the harbour, with the panorama the whole city is organised under.
Santa Cruz Sanctuary
The chapel of Oran's protector below the fort, born of the 1849 cholera procession, with a belvedere over the bay.
Place du 1er Novembre
Oran's main square, with the town hall, the theatre and the two lion statues that give the city its name.
Ahmed Zabana National Museum
Independence history, prehistory and Orientalist painting that explain this Spanish, Ottoman and French city.
Palais du Bey
The 1792 Ottoman palace of the Bey of the west, fine tilework inside a slow restoration with many rooms closed.
Hassan Pacha Mosque
A fine Ottoman mosque of 1796 read from outside only, closed to the public since 2010, minaret and all.
Sidi el Houari
Oran's oldest quarter of Spanish and Ottoman remains, lived in and visibly decaying, best walked by day with a guide.
Front de Mer
The cliff top seafront boulevard above the port, Oran's evening ritual and its easiest free pleasure at sunset.
Where to stay in Oran
Centre / Front de Mer
first trip, short trip
Walkable to the square, cathedral library, museum, theatre and old quarter, with the tram through the middle.
Les Falaises / Canastel - Akid Lotfi
sea views, pools and longer stays
The modern hotel row on the eastern cliffs, rooms facing the bay and taxis needed for every sightseeing day.
Ain el Turk
summer beach weeks
Resort town 15 km west by the sand, good in season with a car, half asleep and a long commute the rest of the year.
Think twice about
- Sidi el Houari as a place to sleep
Few verifiable bookable hotels, steep uneven lanes, visibly decaying buildings and no taxi access to many doors after dark. Visit by day, ideally guided.
- Es Senia / airport area
Hotels by the airport serve a transit night only and add a cross city commute to every sight.
- Scattered eastern suburb apartments
Generic short lets in Bir El Djir and USTO with no named hotel or tram stop nearby leave you without walkable sights or a hotel desk. The risk is transport, not a named dangerous district.
