A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Aral Sea: weeks ahead
- Ships Cemetery: a few days ahead
- Lake Sudochye: a few days ahead
- Ayaz Kala: a few days ahead
- Reserve the two day Aral expedition days to weeks ahead in spring and autumn, and confirm vehicle age, spare wheel, inclusions and payment in writing.
- Never build a one day Nukus stop on a Monday, when the Savitsky Museum is closed.
- Book Tashkent to Nukus flights and the better small hotels early, since both are small capacity in a growing destination.
Is Nukus safe?
- Summer heat averages 36 to 38 degrees and heatwaves pass 40, so avoid midday fortress and seabed visits in summer.
- Dust and salt wind can blow off the Aralkum in spring and summer, so respiratory travellers should carry a mask for dust days.
- Aral tracks are unpaved, remote and out of mobile coverage for long stretches, so check the vehicle and leave your itinerary with your hotel.
- Drink bottled or filtered water and eat bazaar food hot and high turnover. Emergency number 112, Safe Tourism Call Center 1173.
Nukus travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- One day Aral Sea products imply the shore is a day trip, but Muynak is 200 km from Nukus and the sea is far beyond Muynak.
- Padding Nukus into three sightseeing days disappoints, since the Savitsky is the city only world class sight.
- Khiva day trips compress the Savitsky into 1 to 2 hours between a 6am start and a 10pm return, so sleep in Nukus if the art matters.
- Treat any Nukus luxury label as relative to Nukus, not to Tashkent.
Getting around Nukus: public transport and more
- Fly Tashkent to Nukus in about 1 hour 40 minutes, roughly twice daily, or take the overnight sleeper train and book it early.
- Walk the museum quarter core and use Yandex Go for the rest, since summer heat makes even short distances punishing.
- From Khiva, fold the journey into the Elliq Qala fortress transfer instead of a plain 3 to 4 hour shared taxi run.
- Carry som cash and a reserve of crisp US dollars, because Nukus ATMs are reported unreliable and big tours may refuse cards.
