Things to do in Fergana Valley
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Fergana Valley
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best windows: spring blossom and cocoon season, then harvest bazaars and cooler walking weather.
Valley floor heat passes 40 degrees. Sightsee at dawn and take the altitude escapes.
Cold, short days and the year's worst air quality in the valley cities. Workshops still work.
What's on
- Navruz 21 March
Spring new year across the valley: sumalak, festivities and every city outdoors.
- Namangan International Flower Festival late May, dates set per edition
The valley's biggest event, centred on Namangan's Babur Park; hotels fill across the northern valley.
- Arslanbob walnut harvest September to October
The forest village's working harvest season; homestays fill and the forest is at its busiest.
- Atlas Bayrami autumn, dates set per edition
Margilan's festival of traditional textiles: master classes, exhibitions and a crafts fair.

MUSEUM OF GREAT SCHOLARS
A small museum on the valley's poets, scientists and calligraphers, the names behind Kokand's street signs.

The Kokand khans' burial ground, a necropolis of dynastic mausoleums that completes the palace story.
Qoʻqon Bozori

Mugtepa
A Kushan-era fortress mound turned museum reserve in Kosonsoy, the northern valley's least visited ancient site.
The Uzgen Minaret
A Karakhanid minaret and mausoleums in Kyrgyz Uzgen, the medieval layer the rebuilt Uzbek valley largely lost.
Where to stay in Fergana Valley
Kokand centre
western valley base, Rishtan days and the Tashkent train
The palace and bazaar on foot, the valley's second-best hotel bench, and evening park life day tours miss.
Margilan
crafts-first trips built around silk
Yodgorlik and the crafts centre on the doorstep and Kumtepa on market mornings; guesthouses, no luxury tier.
Think twice about
- Sokh exclave
A lived-in Uzbek exclave inside Kyrgyzstan with a sensitive history and no visitor infrastructure. Not a casual day trip.
- Unmarked border land near the Kyrgyz and Tajik frontiers
Boundaries in the valley are intricate and sometimes unmarked on the ground. Stay on main roads and official crossings, and never photograph border infrastructure.
- Rishtan as an overnight base
Superb workshops, almost no hotel stock. Day-trip it from Kokand or Fergana and sleep where the hotel desks are.

Is Fergana Valley safe?
- Watch for bazaar pickpockets, carry your passport at all times, and take care photographing near borders.
- Carry your passport on border-area days, use official crossings only, and re-confirm exclave trips that morning. Emergency: 102 police, 103 ambulance, 1173 tourist police.
Fergana Valley travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Day-trip offers to Arslanbob or Sary-Chelek from the Uzbek side hide six hour drives. Both need nights, not hours.
- Sokh sold as a sight. It is an exclave with no visitor infrastructure, not an attraction.
- Plov at 3pm. The best kazan in every valley city is a late-morning event.
Getting around Fergana Valley: public transport and more
- Ride the Tashkent to Andijan railway through the Kamchik Tunnel and work the valley in spokes: Kokand for Rishtan, Fergana for Margilan, then Andijan and Namangan.
- Shared taxis leave when full from named stands; your hotel desk will name the right stand for each town.
- A private car and driver for a full day, arranged through your hotel, is the best upgrade a time-short traveller can buy.
