Things to do in Nantong
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Nantong
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best window with spring flowers, tulips at Seyuan and roses at the botanical garden, in mild weather.
Mid September to early November is the other best window, with the fishing reopening and Zhang Jian Culture and Art Week in November.
Hot, humid and rainy, then typhoon risk. The coast and the Haohe at night are the compensations.
Cold and grey at around 3 degrees in midwinter. Museums, hot pot and plum blossom from February carry the trip.
National Day Golden Week at the start of October is the one week of peak domestic pressure. Book everything or stay away.

Isolated and car dependent with nothing around after dark. Check the district and map pin, since Qidong and Rugao are over 100 km away.

The developer's corporate collapse makes current operating status uncertain. Verify recent Chinese platform reviews in the month you travel.

Is Nantong safe?
- Summer heat and humidity are the main risk. Climb early, carry water and respect heat warnings at the safari park.
- Dig clams only in scenic area sessions or with locals, and never stay on the flats on a rising tide without a guide.
- Swim only in managed coastal areas on this silty, tidal coast.
- Emergency numbers are police 110, ambulance 120 and fire 119, and the nearest consular services are in Shanghai.
Nantong travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Aggregated listings file Qidong, Rudong, Rugao and even Suzhou area hotels under Nantong. Check the district every time.
- The Evergrande Venice theme streets are a backdrop, not a sight. The beach is the point.
- Langshan on a hazy day has no view. Swap it for a museum day and climb at dawn on the clear morning.
- Do not measure Nantong against Suzhou. Come for Zhang Jian, seafood and a calm river city.
Getting around Nantong: public transport and more
- Metro Line 1 opened in 2022 and Line 2 in 2023, together about 60 km serving the centre, stations and new CBD.
- Taxis and DiDi are cheap in the city, but Qidong and Rudong are 100 km class drives and need a hotel arranged driver.
- Trains to Shanghai take just over an hour since the 2020 Yangtze bridge railway opened.
- Navigate with Baidu or Amap rather than Google Maps in China, and carry your hotel address in Chinese characters.
